Overwatch Doctrine: Hero 54's Kit, Perks and Every Nerf

Blizzard's vampire-styled Support arrived strong, lost numbers on launch day and again a week later, and some players on Blizzard's forums still call him overtuned.

VerdictLearn him now: even after two nerfs Doctrine is still the Support some forum players want cut, and Infuse management is the whole hero.

Overwatch Doctrine is Hero 54, a Support who joined the roster with Season 5 on October 6, 2026. He heals and damages with one hitscan scepter, hands teammates attack speed with his drones, and his ultimate cuts enemy maximum health. Blizzard has already nerfed him twice, on launch day and in the October 13 hotfix, and players on Blizzard's forums were still calling him overtuned on October 21.

Overwatch is free to play, so the real question is whether he is worth your time. Our answer is yes, with one condition: you have to like managing the two charges of Infuse, because the rest of his kit hangs off them.

Doctrine's abilities after the October 13 hotfix

Blizzard revealed Doctrine at BlizzCon on September 12 and let everyone play him in a Hero Trial through September 14. Our BlizzCon 2026 recap covers the rest of that show. The kit below is what you get now; the numbers are from Blizzard's patch notes, cross-checked with the Overwatch Wiki on Fandom and the Weird Gloop Overwatch Wiki before publication. Blizzard does not print the infused shot numbers; both wikis list 90 damage and 120 healing.

AbilityWhat it doesCurrent numbers
Eternal Scepter (primary)Mid-range hitscan shot that heals allies and damages enemies. Infused: a larger piercing blast55 damage or healing per shot; infused 90 damage, 120 healing
Infuse (secondary)Adds an effect to your next ability2 charges
Invigorating DronesDrones on one ally for attack speed and healing. Infused: drones on you too+30% attack speed, 5 seconds
Shrouded MomentumHorizontal rush with damage reduction. Infused: free flight40% damage reduction, 8 second cooldown
Deliverance (ultimate)A drone swarm that lowers enemy maximum health and gives allies overhealthUp to 50% max health cut, up to 150 overhealth, 6 seconds

Hero designer Scott Kennedy put the whole hero in one line during the BlizzCon deep dive: "Knowing when to use or save your infuse charges is the key to mastering our new hero." In practice that means saving a charge for Drones. An infused Drones cast puts the attack speed on you as well as your target, and the infused rush is your only way to fly out of a dive. Spend both charges on scepter blasts and you have neither.

Every Doctrine nerf so far

Blizzard's own reason for the first round was blunt: Doctrine "was generally well received during the trial weekend but was overperforming relative to other supports." The changes landed in the Season 5 patch, then a hotfix followed a week later.

DateAbilityChange
October 6DeliveranceUltimate cost up 8%; drone fire rate 4 to 5; overhealth and debuff 8 to 6 seconds; decay 5 to 4 seconds
October 6Transfusion (perk)Damage and healing conversion cut by 50%
October 6Invigorating DronesAttack speed 35% to 30%
October 6Shrouded MomentumCooldown 7 to 8 seconds; damage reduction 50% to 40%; no more critical hit immunity
October 13Eternal ScepterDamage and healing 60 to 55
October 13Invigorating DronesDuration 6 to 5 seconds

The October 20 patch was bug fixes only, with no Doctrine line. If you played the September trial, the hero you remember had 35% attack speed on drones for 6 seconds and an ultimate debuff that lasted 8. That version is gone. One wiki number is stale as we write: it still lists a 5 second decay on Deliverance, while the October 6 notes set it to 4.

Which perks to take

Perks unlock mid-match. The minor choice comes at level 2 and the major at level 3, per Blizzard's hero page:

  • Saving Grace (minor): Invigorating Drones heal for 40 health when applied.
  • Sanguine Siphon (minor): heal for 50% of the damage you deal with infused Eternal Scepter.
  • Transfusion (major): damage and healing reduce Infuse's cooldown.
  • Cost of Life (major): give up 25 maximum health for 20% more Eternal Scepter healing.

Bily, whose guide video is titled "Doctrine Guide by a World Cup Player," takes Saving Grace and Transfusion, and the games.gg guide also calls Transfusion "the recommended pick." We agree, with a note: both picks date from launch week, and Transfusion lost half its conversion rate on October 6. It still feeds the Infuse loop the hero is built on; Cost of Life only adds healing, and a Support who flies into off angles has no 25 health to spare.

Bily's positioning advice fits the same kit. Before a fight, "stay back around cover supporting your team and looking for damage," then take an off angle once it starts, and keep the rush ready so you can get back.

Who Doctrine is: the story behind Hero 54

Doctrine is Tamuka Yeukai, a cyberneticist from Zimbabwe. Blizzard's hero page lists him as 77, with a birthday of October 20, which makes him the oldest hero on the roster by the wiki's count. He spent his life trying to save his chronically ill brother, Tatenda, and the hero page says he ended up "sacrificing the lives of many to preserve the one." Tatenda turned him in, and he spent decades in Watchpoint: Grímsvötn until Doomfist, Akande Ogundimu, broke him out. Grímsvötn is also Season 5's new Escort map, which Blizzard calls "the first new Escort map in years."

Is he a vampire? Not literally. Narrative designer Eleni Rivera said at BlizzCon that he is "really giving vampire, but he's not actually one." His technology turns back the clock by draining life force from others, which is why a man that old looks young. Blizzard's Season 5 art leans into the look anyway.

What players said in the first two weeks

Two nerfs have not ended the complaints on Blizzard's forums. On October 12, before the hotfix, one player wrote that "Sombra is strong, but Doctrine is obscenely strong." On October 21, after both rounds, a reply in a thread titled "How is Doctrine OP?" claimed he had "the highest win rate above plat and the highest pick rate at every rank above silver." Blizzard has not published those rates, so treat that as one player's reading, and the same thread pushed back: the player who opened it asked whether his numbers were "high because he just came out," with people wanting "to play the hot tech vampire for Halloween." A post on October 18 called him overtuned and dull at once, arguing that "once his numbers are reined in," nobody will care about him.

Our call: Doctrine is worth your Support hours right now, before a third pass lands. He is playable in the Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games event through November 2, and the Crimson Regent Doctrine skin sits in the Ultimate Battle Pass. If you want another hero shooter to compare him with, our Deadlock preview covers Valve's, and Blizzard's WoW Forever launches on November 4.
