Enshrouded 1.0 Changes: What's New After Early Access

Keen Games finished the map, ended the story and rebuilt the first hours. Here's what actually changed, in the order it matters, and whether your old save should stay retired.

VerdictReturning players should start a fresh world on 1.0: the new early game, voiced lore and the finished map are worth more than an old save.

The Enshrouded 1.0 changes hit hardest in the first ten hours and the last ten, so if you're coming back to Embervale after a year away, or buying in for the first time, it's a different game. Keen Games released it on October 15, 2026, out of Early Access on Steam and on PS5, and it was still sitting at #21 on Steam's top sellers a week later. Here's what matters most, ranked by how much it changes what you'll actually do.

Eneba: save on games and game cards

1. The map is finished: Cinder's Cradle

The headline is a whole new region in the north, past the gates beyond Veilwater Basin. Keen describes two layers: "Below, lava flows through a barren wasteland littered with the ruins of a mysterious past," and above it, "a realm of floating islands filled with unusual fauna." Two new Hollow Halls opened too, one in the Albaneve Summits and one in Veilwater Basin ("bring your snorkel"), and the edges of Springlands, Blackmire and Kindlewastes got new areas with extra Shroud roots for skill points.

If you ever hit the old map's edge and stopped, this is the reason 1.0 exists.

2. The story has an ending

"With update 1.0.0.0, the story of Embervale is concluded - for now." The main quest now takes you back into old buildings players spent years trying to open, and it ends against what Keen calls evil's "strongest champion yet," high in the sky. If you parked your save because the plot stopped mid-sentence, this is your cue.

3. A higher ceiling: level 50, gear 55, altar 15

Max player level rises to 50 and gear upgrades to 55. A new Flame level before Cinder's Cradle lifts the Flame Altar cap to 15, there's a new survivor who specializes in Ancient recipes, and a full new crafting tier with new building pieces. The progression math changes, so builds from Early Access will need rework. Our Valheim 1.0 explainer covers a similar endgame jump from the other big survival release this fall.

4. A new early game

This is the change returning players underrate. Keen added more chests in Springlands and Revelwood, touched up roads and enemy camps so you get lost less, and reworked early recipes: "The goal was to reduce the grind and get players to the good stuff faster." The Albaneve Summits boss also got "a substantial nerf to its health" and more chances to hit it in melee.

Early Access saves do carry over (they're converted to a new format), and PC owners don't need to buy again. Keen still says "we strongly encourage you to start over!" We agree: an old save skips the very part they rebuilt. It's a good example of the finish line we look for in our Early Access games worth buying roundup.

5. Mages got the biggest combat upgrade

Nine new spell types, eternal versions of every spell so you never run out of charges late game, upgradable eternal spells and arrows, a wand heavy attack, and skeletons you can summon to fight beside you. Across the whole update there are 14 enemy types in the new faction and 37 new enemies counting variants. If you bounced off magic in Early Access, it's worth a second build.

6. Lore you can listen to

Every lore note, letter and book is now voiced in English, German and Mandarin, and you can queue notes like an audiobook while you explore. The main crafting survivors talk now too. One longtime Steam player calls "the auto loot and voice acting from the books you pick up" the best new feature. Small change, big difference to how the world feels.

7. Sparkworks: build your own dungeons

Sparkworks is a logic system for your world: switches, traps, puzzles, enemy encounters, parkour courses. Paired with Adventure Sharing, it's a reason to keep the game installed after the credits. Builders who loved our Valheim base building guide or the picks in our best base-building games list should look here first.

8. Quality-of-life wins

A free-flying build mode, loot pickup in a wider radius (on a button or automatic), storage chests you can upgrade without emptying, an option for more realistic body proportions at the Barber, and a "brick renderer" that keeps distant terrain and buildings detailed. HDR is supported now as well. Several of these sit under a changelog heading Keen titled "Player suggestions we included," so if you filed a complaint in Early Access, check this list first.

What the launch trailer shows

The official 1.0 trailer is under two minutes. At 0:45 a player swings on a grappling hook across a red-rock canyon. At 1:03 a huge castle-town build appears with an on-screen credit to the player who made it, which says a lot about where Keen thinks the long tail is. At 1:39 a wizard-hatted character carries an oversized key through a green glow, and the end card at 1:45 lists Steam, PS5 and GeForce Now.

Hotfixes since launch

Three hotfixes landed in the first week. 1.0.0.1 locked the Fire Wisp scroll at level 27 after it scaled into absurd late-game damage, and flagged a reverb bug (keep the master volume at 100% until it's fixed). 1.0.0.2 fixed the world settings menu that some players couldn't open and a grey-fog rendering bug on Nvidia cards. 1.0.0.3 on October 21 restored missing Early Access rewards, fixed water simulation and save migration crashes, and reduced V-Sync stutter on AMD.

The world settings bug hit hard: one veteran player's negative review says "now im unable to edit world settings the button just doesnt work." Performance is the open complaint. Another player reports a "performance drop after 1.0 release. From stable 60 on 1080p to 45," and the last 30 days of reviews sit a few points below the all-time score.

Is Enshrouded 1.0 worth it?

Taken together, the Enshrouded 1.0 changes make it an easy yes for solo players and small co-op groups who like building as much as fighting. The scale is the selling point: one player is "about 72 hours in and still haven't upgraded my Fire Altar to level 2." The fair criticism is that the world can feel static; another longtime player says it "lacks enemy variety and long-term motivation." If you want a group game for this month, our September co-op picks and October Next Fest survival demos are worth a look, and Abiotic Factor and Palworld are the obvious alternatives if Embervale's fantasy isn't your thing. Check the minimum spec in the table before buying: the RAM and storage asks are steep for an older PC.

How we checked this

We haven't played the 1.0 build. On October 22, 2026 we read Keen Games' full 1.0 changelog post, the launch FAQ and all three hotfix notes on Steam, pulled review totals and 60 English reviews written since launch, checked the store page and system requirements, and stepped through the official launch trailer for the timestamps above.
