Five Steam Next Fest co-op demos stand out for October 2026 if you have a group chat to fill. This list covers what each developer has confirmed: when the demo opens, how many friends can join, and whether anything you do carries into the full game.

We have not played these builds. Every detail comes from the Steam store pages, the studios' own posts and their official trailers, listed in the references.

TL;DR: Next Fest runs October 19 to 26. The co-op picks are Meltdown Crew (a 1980s reactor for up to 6 people), Inside Job (1 to 4 player prison escape, plus a 10-player LAST COUNT mode), We Are So Cooked (carry a body to the exit, now a 2027 game), Loftia (cosy MMO-style demo that keeps your progress) and Never Be Alone (zombie survival, demo on October 19).

Which Steam Next Fest co-op demos should you play? (quick answer)

Start with Meltdown Crew if your group likes shouting, Inside Job if it likes planning, and We Are So Cooked if it likes physics chaos. Loftia is the cosy option and the only one here that promises your demo progress carries into Early Access. Never Be Alone is the pick for zombie survival fans. All five open with the fest on October 19.

Key Takeaways

  • Valve's window is October 19, 10:00 AM PDT, to October 26, 10:00 AM PDT.
  • Biggest groups: Inside Job's LAST COUNT (2 to 10 players) and Meltdown Crew (you plus up to 5 friends).
  • Loftia's demo opens at 1pm EDT on October 19 and keeps your progress for Early Access on November 3.
  • We Are So Cooked slipped to 2027 so it can launch with multiple maps.
  • Never Be Alone has crossed 185,500 wishlists, the largest number posted by any studio on this list.

Meltdown Crew: keep a 1980s reactor from exploding

Meltdown Crew asks you to "run a barely-stable nuclear reactor with your friends in this online co-op physics chaos game." Meltdown Games develops it and Duhndal publishes it, with release planned for December 2026.

The store page sets out the hook: a "1980s style nuclear reactor" that you run "by using proximity voice chat and phones," with "you and up to 5 friends." Everything is physics-based and "fuel rods are fragile," so bumping a doorway or a coworker can end the shift. The studio's Next Fest post is short: "Bring your crew, try the demo, and let us know how your shifts go." If the Gamble With Your Friends guide sounds like your group's kind of night, this is the demo to download first.

Inside Job: a 1 to 4 player prison escape

Inside Job lets you "escape prison in co-op" with 1 to 4 players, or "survive LAST COUNT with up to 10: no teams, deadly games, only one walks out." Rafiq Studios develops and publishes it, and Early Access starts on November 2, 2026.

The studio describes "a co-op prison escape for 1-4 players" built on routine: the day runs on a schedule and "the guards expect you to follow it." Some inmates trade information, and "some only deal if you play a hand of cards first." A second post says LAST COUNT, the 2 to 10 player mode, "is free in the Inside Job demo until Early Access starts on November 2." That makes it the best demo on this list for a big Discord group.

We Are So Cooked: get the body to the exit

We Are So Cooked is a "1-4 player co-op physics-stealth game where the objective is simple: Get the body to the exit." Dwarven Brothers develops it and 1312 Interactive publishes it. Steam lists Q1 2027.

This one was meant to be out sooner. In September the studio wrote that "We Are So Cooked will now launch in 2027," trading the wait for "multiple maps at launch instead of waiting for them to arrive post-launch." The Next Fest build is "the first public hands-on demo," so this is the first chance anyone outside playtests gets to try it. Fans of physics-comedy co-op should also read our Pratfall guide.

Loftia: the cosy demo that keeps your progress

Loftia is "a cozy, multiplayer world" where you play with others "to farm, craft, explore, decorate, and create a meaningful impact - together." Qloud Games develops and publishes it, and Early Access starts on November 3, 2026.

Loftia has the clearest demo plan here. It goes live on "October 19th at 1pm EDT" and stays up "until the Next Fest ends on October 26th." The studio says "anything you complete or collect during your time in the demo will remain with your character when Early Access begins a week later." The demo covers Loftia City, ending "just before you reach the next district, the Hanging Gardens," and you can "team up for Adventures to solve group puzzles and challenges, contribute to World Projects, play social minigames." Its closed beta drew 25,000 players. On r/loftia, one player summed up the reaction: "Love that progress made in the demo will carry over into early access!"

Never Be Alone: zombie survival with a safezone to protect

Never Be Alone is an "open-world zombie survival game" for solo or co-op play, where you "protect a fragile safezone" and dig into your past "10 years after the outbreak." Jonas Jensen and Wes Larkin develop it, Beast Studios publishes it, and Early Access starts on December 8, 2026.

The demo "drops" on "October 19th" as part of Next Fest. The studio has crossed "185,500+ wishlists" and in July said it had "received funding from a local bank" to finish the game. For longer co-op survival sessions you can play today, our Sons of the Forest guide and the Romestead co-op guide cover two good options.

Analysis: matching the demo to your group

Group size decides most of this. Four friends can play everything here; six fit Meltdown Crew; more than that, and Inside Job's LAST COUNT is the only option that takes up to 10. Duos have the widest choice, since every game on the list accepts two players.

Timing matters too. Inside Job and Loftia launch in early November, so their demos are a direct test before you spend money. We Are So Cooked is a 2027 game and Meltdown Crew a December one, so treat those demos as a wishlist decision. Loftia is the only demo here that promises to carry your progress forward.

Our take

This is a varied co-op set: a voice-chat panic game, a planning-heavy escape, a physics comedy, a cosy social sim and a zombie survival game. Meltdown Crew and We Are So Cooked have the easiest hooks to explain to friends, which is what got co-op demos noticed at the June 2026 Next Fest. We will wait until we have played them before saying which one holds up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best co-op demos at Steam Next Fest October 2026? Our shortlist is Meltdown Crew, Inside Job, We Are So Cooked, Loftia and Never Be Alone. Each developer has confirmed a demo for the October 19 to 26 fest, and each supports online co-op. We picked them from developer posts, not from playing them.

How many players can join each co-op demo? Meltdown Crew takes you and up to 5 friends. Inside Job's prison escape is for 1 to 4 players, and its LAST COUNT mode takes 2 to 10. We Are So Cooked is 1 to 4 players. Loftia and Never Be Alone have not published a demo cap.

Does Loftia demo progress carry over? Yes. Qloud Games says anything you complete or collect in the demo stays with your character when Early Access starts on November 3. The demo runs from October 19 at 1pm EDT until October 26.

When is We Are So Cooked coming out? The studio moved it to 2027 so it can launch with multiple maps, and Steam now lists Q1 2027. The Next Fest build is its first public hands-on demo.

Can I buy any of these co-op games yet? No. None has a Steam price or pre-order, and we found no key store selling them. Inside Job enters Early Access on November 2 and Loftia on November 3, so those are the first two to watch.
