Steam Next Fest horror games for October 2026: five demos, all playable before the fest, with what changed for Next Fest and which saves carry to launch.

7 min readBy Finn CallowayLast reviewed

Five Steam Next Fest horror games are worth a download before Halloween, and you do not have to wait for October 19 to try any of them. Every demo on this list is already on Steam. What changes during the fest is the build: most of these studios are shipping bigger updates for the event.

We have not played these demos. Every detail comes from the Steam store pages, the developers' own posts and their official trailers, listed in the references.

TL;DR: Next Fest runs October 19 to 26, and all five demos are live now. Pick BLIGHTEN for a retro survival-horror shooter, Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game for deckbuilder horror, Deeper for co-op underwater dread, Lurking for giant spiders, and Curse of Resthaven if you want a demo whose save carries into an October 29 launch.

Which Steam Next Fest horror games should you play? (quick answer)

Start with Curse of Resthaven if you want something you can buy soon: it launches on October 29 and its demo save carries over. Play Lurking for a short, sharp scare, and Deeper if you have a friend to dive with. BLIGHTEN suits shooter fans, and Mr Magpie is the pick for anyone who likes card games with a nasty sense of humour.

Key Takeaways

  • Valve's window is October 19, 10:00 AM PDT, to October 26, 10:00 AM PDT.
  • All five demos are already playable on Steam. BLIGHTEN, Deeper and Lurking have bigger updates promised for the fest.
  • Curse of Resthaven launches on October 29, 2026, two days before Halloween.
  • Saves carry to the full game in Curse of Resthaven and, after its Next Fest update, Lurking.
  • Deeper is the co-op option: some swordfish only appear with 2 or more players.

BLIGHTEN: a solo-made retro survival-horror shooter

BLIGHTEN is an "intense first person survival horror game with grim retro style graphics" set in an abandoned facility. You find "parts and ammo" and use an "extensive arsenal of various firearms from shotguns to assault rifles." Blight Software, a solo developer, makes and publishes it.

The demo has been live since July. In September the developer said the game had reached 30,000 wishlists after "almost 8 months of development" and promised a Next Fest update with "HARD Difficulty," a new level that is "the biggest one yet by far," new enemies and non-hostile NPCs. On r/boomershooters, one commenter put it simply: "Spas shotgun and horror instantly gives me F.E.A.R vibes." If you liked the PAPERHEAD demo in June, this is the closest match here.

Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game: deckbuilder horror

Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game is a "surreal corporate horror deckbuilder hosted by a deranged puppet." The rule to remember: "just avoid the jerry cards. jerrys will kill you." Giant Light Studios develops it, and Behaviour Interactive and Gambit Digital publish it. Behaviour's other titles include Dead by Daylight and 7 Days to Die.

A "newly expanded and polished demo" went live on October 5. You can now "explore Mr Magpie's office," and the new SHARES system lets you buy stock in the company, but "if you die, you lose them all." The update also added nine localizations. Card-game fans who enjoyed our Gambonanza vs Balatro comparison or Scoundrel should start here.

Deeper: co-op horror under the sea

In Deeper, "your mission is to recover lost and forgotten artifacts." You "set out with your crew on underwater expeditions ever more hostile, ever darker, ever deeper." Team Breakout develops and publishes it, with Early Access planned for Q1 2027.

The demo has been out since May, and the studio says "more than 13k people have launched it." For Next Fest it is releasing update 0.6.0, which adds "a skill system to improve your character" and "a performance boost." Upgrades "are individual and persistent," so you keep them between sessions even if your friends are behind. The team also changed the swordfish: "some swordfishes therefore only appear when playing with 2 or more players." If you play Subnautica 2, this is the darker co-op version of that idea.

Lurking: giant spiders in a PSX-style building

Lurking is a "first-person horror game set in a building infested by giant spiders." Its solo developer, Jerome at Ctrl Freak, lists "Amnesia the Bunker and early Resident Evil games" as inspirations and promises "approximately 2 hours of gameplay" with "PSX/PS2 style graphics."

The Steam demo arrived on August 20 with "40mn of content vs 10-12mn in the early demo." Its developer thanked more than 15,000 early players and 150+ playtesters. For Next Fest, Lurking is adding English, French, Spanish and Russian, controller and Steam Deck support, and "save/load (that will carry over to the full game!)." That makes it a low-risk start: whatever you finish now still counts later.

Curse of Resthaven: the demo that leads straight into launch

Curse of Resthaven is a "single-player narrative roguelite" where you "govern a cursed island as you investigate your niece's mysterious disappearance," using "card-based expeditions." Hilltop Studios develops it and Digital Bandidos publishes it. It launches on PC and Mac on October 29, 2026, "two days before Halloween."

A "new expanded demo (ahead of Next Fest)" arrived on October 8. It covers the "full six-day loop," starts you on "one of three main story paths," and the studio says "progress from this new demo will carry over to the full game when it launches on October 29." The cast is 11 actors voicing 25 characters across "nearly 7,000 voiced lines." The game passed 10,000 wishlists in August.

Analysis: which horror demo to play first

Because every demo is already live, the real question is when to play. Mr Magpie and Curse of Resthaven shipped their new builds in early October, so what you download today is close to the fest version. BLIGHTEN, Deeper and Lurking all have bigger updates promised for the event, so if you have not tried them yet, waiting until October 19 gets you the better build.

Saves matter for two of them. Curse of Resthaven is the one to finish first, since it launches days after the fest and carries your progress. Lurking's save carry-over arrives with the Next Fest update, so start it after the patch.

Our take

This is a well-spread horror lineup: a shooter, a card game, a co-op dive, a short spider scare and a story-heavy roguelite. Curse of Resthaven has the clearest path from demo to purchase, and Lurking is the easiest to fit into one evening. We will hold judgement on quality until we have played them, but the timing works well for a Halloween week.
