Steam Next Fest demos expire only when the developer behind them decides to switch them off. Valve sets no end date, asks developers to keep demos up after the event, and documents exactly what happens to players when a demo is pulled. With the October 2026 edition starting on October 19, here is what Valve's own rules say, and what actually happened to demos from the June 2026 edition.

TL;DR: There is no automatic expiry. Each developer decides how long a Next Fest demo stays live, and Valve encourages them to leave it up after the fest. When a developer deactivates a demo, you keep the library entry but can't launch it. Of five June 2026 Next Fest demos we covered, two still show a demo on Steam in October. The October 2026 fest runs October 19 to 26, starting and ending at 10:00 AM PDT.

Do Steam Next Fest demos expire? (quick answer)

No, not on a timer. Valve's Next Fest FAQ answers the question "How long should I leave my demo up after Steam Next Fest ends?" with "it's up to you to decide," then adds that Valve encourages developers "to consider leaving your demo up beyond the conclusion of the Steam Next Fest you joined." A demo goes away only when its developer deactivates it.

Valve also explains why it asks: "Many players have expressed disappointment when demos disappear immediately." So it tells developers to communicate a shutdown in advance, "so they can prioritize playing it accordingly."

Key takeaways

  • No Steam-imposed expiry: the developer decides when a demo comes down
  • A deactivated demo stays in your library but cannot be launched again through Steam
  • Demos can go live before the fest; the only rule is being live by the start
  • Demo saves carrying over to the full game is up to each developer
  • Steam Next Fest October 2026 runs October 19 to 26, 10:00 AM PDT both days

What happens when a developer pulls a demo

Steam's documentation on demos covers this in one paragraph. Deactivating a demo "will prevent players from downloading or launching your demo. Players that already have your demo in their library will continue to see the demo (so they may uninstall it) but cannot launch it again."

That answers the most common worry: installing a demo during the fest does not let you keep playing it after the developer turns it off. Valve adds one technical caveat for developers. A disabled demo may still launch outside Steam "unless your demo requires Steam to launch and checks to see if the user has a current license to it." In practice that depends on how each demo was built, so don't count on it.

Removing the demo button from a game's store page is a different thing. Valve notes that this "does not disable the demo, it just removes the visible button from your full game's store page." So a demo that seems to have vanished from a store page might still work for people who already have it.

What happened to June 2026's Next Fest demos

Valve's official trailer for the June 2026 edition, the one these demos came from:

We covered several demos from the June 2026 edition. On October 8, 2026, we checked each game's current Steam store data for a listed demo. The store data shows whether a demo is attached to the game's page, which is the same thing a player sees.

GameOur June coverageSteam status on October 8, 2026Demo still listed?
Tears of Metalco-op roguelike demoReleased July 22, 2026No
SPRAWL zerodemo previewReleased September 8, 2026Yes
Grave Seasonsfarming sim demoComing March 9, 2027No
PAPERHEADboomer shooter demoComing October 9, 2026No
Distant Shore: BRETAGNEmagnetic parkour demoComing soonYes

Two of five still list a demo as of October 8, and one of those, SPRAWL zero, kept its demo even after the full game launched. A missing listing does not always mean the demo was switched off, since a developer can remove the store button without disabling the demo. For a player, though, the result is the same: there's nothing to download from the store page.

Valor Mortis is the clearest case of a deliberate shutdown, and it was not a demo nobody played: during the June fest its developer posted "Thanks for playing one of the Top Demos of Next Fest!" on Steam. The developer, One More Level, announced on September 4 that "the Steam Demo will go offline next week on September 8," explaining that the demo levels were "bespoke versions of those chapters that we recreated for Steam Next Fest" and no longer matched the full game. The Valor Mortis hub covers the October 13 launch.

How Steam Next Fest October 2026 works for players

Valve's documentation sets the dates: the October 2026 edition "runs October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC-7) to October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT (UTC-7)." Our Steam Next Fest page converts that to your local time. Valve describes the event as a multi-day celebration "where fans can try out demos, chat with developers, watch live streams, and learn about upcoming games on Steam."

A few rules shape what you'll see:

  • Demos can arrive early. Valve says developers can release a demo "anytime," as long as it's live before the event begins. The Press Preview, which opened to selected press on October 8, includes every registered game.
  • The first days are shuffled. Valve says "the first few days of Next Fest are completely randomized" outside named lists and personalized sections, and after a few days logged-in users see carousels "personalized by an algorithm that's based on user behavior during Next Fest."
  • Only unreleased games take part. Every entry must be released after the fest ends on October 26, and each game can join only one Next Fest.
  • Livestreams are optional. Since October 2024 there's no official Next Fest livestream, and developer streams sit in their own tab.
  • A Wrap-Up page follows. Shortly after the fest, Steam posts a page of the games with the most played demos.

Our June 2026 Next Fest roundup shows the kind of picks we make once the lineup is public, and the Bronzebeard's Tavern 2 demo preview is an example of a demo covered outside the fest.

How not to lose a demo you like

None of this needs special tools. It follows from Valve's rules:

1. Play it during the fest week. Developers have the final say on timing, and some pull demos as launch nears, like Valor Mortis did.

2. Wishlist and follow the game. Valve lets a developer email wishlisters once, within 14 days of the demo's first release, so a wishlist is also how you hear about it. Steam's wishlist page also flags demos now. In Valve's words: "We now highlight when a game on your wishlist has a demo available. You can also be notified when a demo is released for a game in your wishlist."

Players have noticed. In an r/Steam thread about the change, u/3guitars wrote: "I played the demo for fall of Avalon once my wishlist told me about it and immediately snagged it after an hour or two."

3. Read the developer's posts. Valve tells developers to announce a shutdown ahead of time. Valor Mortis gave four days' notice in a Steam post.

4. Don't count on saves carrying over. Valve recommends developers store demo saves in the shared Steam Cloud so the full game can pick them up, but it's a recommendation, not a guarantee.

Our take

Based on Valve's documentation and the store data above, the safest reading is that a Next Fest demo is a loan, not a gift. Valve leaves the timing to developers and only asks them to warn players, and the June examples show both outcomes: SPRAWL zero kept its demo after launch, while Valor Mortis pulled a demo that had been among the fest's top demos. If a demo matters to you, play it during the fest week and keep the game on your wishlist so Steam can flag the next one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Steam Next Fest demos expire? Not automatically. Valve leaves it to each developer to decide how long a demo stays up after Next Fest, and it encourages them to keep demos available after the event. A demo only stops working when its developer deactivates it.

Can I still play a demo I already installed after it is removed? Usually not through Steam. Valve's documentation says that when a demo is deactivated, players who have it will still see it in their library so they can uninstall it, but cannot launch it again.

When does Steam Next Fest October 2026 start and end? It runs from October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT to October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT, according to Valve's Steamworks documentation. That is 17:00 UTC on both days.

Can developers release Next Fest demos early? Yes. Valve says developers can release a demo at any time, as long as it is live before the festival begins. Some go live for the Press Preview, which started October 8, 2026.

Does demo progress carry over to the full game? Only if the developer builds it in. Valve recommends storing demo saves in the shared Steam Cloud so the full game can load them, but that is a recommendation to developers, not something Steam does by default.

Will Steam tell me when a demo I wishlisted is released? Developers can send one demo notification email to wishlisters, within 14 days of the demo's first release. If they used it before Next Fest, there is no second email.
