The boomer-shooter revival has a new entry, and this one comes with a pedigree. The SPRAWL zero demo went live for Steam Next Fest on June 15, giving players a first hands-on look at the prequel to MAETH's cult cyberpunk shooter SPRAWL. Publisher Kwalee is positioning it as a faster, console-flavored take on the wall-running original, and the two-level demo is free to download through June 22.
Note: SPRAWL zero is a prequel, not a sequel. You do not need the 2023 game to follow it.
Kwalee and developer MAETH released the SPRAWL zero demo on June 15, the opening day of Steam Next Fest's June 2026 edition. The fest runs June 15 to 22 and is the last big demo showcase before the Steam Summer Sale.
The demo includes the first two campaign levels. The Gravity Shield, one of the standout tools, unlocks partway through the second level rather than being held back for the full release, so you get a real sense of the kit early. You play as FIVE, a cybernetically augmented soldier cutting through a cyberpunk city that is collapsing under a militarized government and a techno-religious cult.
SPRAWL zero was first revealed at IGN Fan Fest in February 2026. It is confirmed for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Kwalee has not given a full release date.

Most Next Fest demos come from unproven teams. SPRAWL zero does not. The original SPRAWL launched on August 23, 2023 and sits at a Very Positive rating, with 87% of more than 1,699 reviews positive. That base of goodwill is the difference between a demo that gets lost in the fest and one with a built-in audience watching for it.
The pitch leans hard on 2000s console shooters. MAETH cites F.E.A.R. and Halo as touchstones, and the design shows it: weighty firefights, smart enemy AI that flanks and calls out positions, and arenas built for movement rather than cover. The original was a wall-running movement shooter; the prequel keeps the speed but swaps in a new toolkit built around the Gravity Gloves.
That toolkit is the reason to try the demo. The Gravity Shield catches enemy gunfire and returns it. A Rushdown ability makes FIVE briefly invulnerable while he plows through a room. Bullet-time stretches the chaos so you can line up shots across more than 40 weapons. If you bounced off the doom-clone wave because every entry felt the same, this one is at least pulling from a different decade.

Is the SPRAWL zero demo free? Yes. The SPRAWL zero demo is a free download on Steam during Steam Next Fest, which runs June 15 to 22, 2026. It stays available on the store page after the fest in most cases, though Kwalee has not confirmed how long it remains up.
How long is the SPRAWL zero demo? The demo covers the first two levels of the campaign. Most players finish a clean run in roughly 30 to 45 minutes, but the speed-focused design rewards replaying for faster times and unexplored side routes.
Is SPRAWL zero a sequel or a prequel to SPRAWL? It is a prequel. Kwalee and developer MAETH frame SPRAWL zero as an origin story set before the 2023 game SPRAWL, with a new protagonist called FIVE rather than the original game's lead.
What platforms is SPRAWL zero coming to? Kwalee has confirmed SPRAWL zero for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. No full release date has been announced yet, only the Next Fest demo.
Do I need to play the original SPRAWL first? No. SPRAWL zero is a standalone prequel, so it works as an entry point. The original SPRAWL holds a Very Positive rating on Steam if you want the wall-running movement shooter that started the series.
What makes SPRAWL zero different from other boomer shooters? The Gravity Gloves are the hook. You can catch incoming enemy fire and throw it back, slow time with bullet-time, and trigger a Rushdown state that turns you invulnerable while you charge through a room. It leans on 2000s console-FPS pacing over the doom-clone template.
