Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core

Ghost Ship Games

This DRG Rogue Core Spotter build guide covers the force-multiplier class whose damage lives in everyone else's guns, and the one mechanic new players get wrong: you shoot the ground, not the enemy. The Spotter marks targets for critical hits that the whole squad benefits from, and its best use is laying down AoE crit zones rather than sticking single marks. This guide covers the ground-throw technique, the crit build, the passive radar, and the Falconer pairing that defines the co-op meta.

TL;DR: The Spotter marks targets with Crit Darts, turning hits on marked enemies into crits for the whole squad. The key mechanic: hitting an enemy directly is a single-target mark, but shooting the ground leaves an AoE crit zone (around 10 seconds) that buffs every enemy inside it, so aim at the ground in the swarm's path. Build full crit: Critical Splash (bigger ground AoE) and Potent Dart (longer duration) stack, plus mark duration and charges. It has a passive radar that detects allies and enemies. It works solo but is a force multiplier in co-op, and Spotter plus Falconer is the best two-class pairing in the game.

DRG Rogue Core Spotter: damage in everyone's guns

The Spotter is the class whose contribution does not show up on its own damage meter. All five Reclaimers share the same base stats, and the Spotter's signature is the Crit Darts: it marks targets, converting all hits on the marked target to critical hits for the mark duration, and every squadmate hitting that target benefits, not just the Spotter. That makes it a force multiplier. The numbers scale fast: a few extra seconds of mark duration applied across four focus-firing players is a large amount of additional crit output per dart. The more your squad concentrates fire, the more each mark is worth.

Key takeaways

  • The Spotter marks targets for crits that the whole squad benefits from.
  • Direct hit = single-target mark; shooting the ground = AoE crit zone (~10 seconds).
  • Aim at the ground in the swarm's path to buff multiple enemies and last longer.
  • Build full crit: Critical Splash (ground AoE radius) and Potent Dart (duration) stack.
  • Then prioritize mark duration and charge count for uptime and multi-group marking.
  • It has a passive radar that detects allies and enemies for squad awareness.
  • Works solo, but is a force multiplier in co-op. Spotter plus Falconer is the best pairing.

Shoot the ground, not the enemy

Here is the mechanic that defines good Spotter play: hitting an enemy directly applies a single-target dart, but shooting the ground leaves a marking zone that lasts around 10 seconds and increases crit chance for every enemy inside it. So the instinct to "tag the big enemy" is the wrong one. Sticking a dart to one target buffs only that target for a shorter time. Shooting the ground in the path of your intended target, or into the middle of a swarm, creates a radius that catches multiple enemies and lasts longer than a direct stick. read where the enemies are going and paint the ground there, so they walk into a crit zone rather than you chasing them with single marks.

This does feel counterintuitive, and the community has noted it openly, players describe the awkwardness of aiming at the ground near a swarm instead of at the enemies themselves. But once you internalize that the ground is your target, the Spotter's output transforms. You are not marking enemies, you are marking territory.

The build: full crit, bigger and longer zones

The Spotter build is, in the community's words, undeniably a full-on crit build. Everything feeds the crit-mark engine.

The two cornerstone upgrades are Critical Splash, which increases the AoE radius of the Crit Dart when shot at the ground, and Potent Dart, which increases its duration, and both stack multiple times. Bigger zones catch more of a swarm; longer zones mean more crit uptime per dart. Stacking these is the core of the build, because they directly scale the ground-zone technique that the class is built around.

After those, prioritize mark duration and charge count. Extended duration increases how many actions each squad member takes inside the crit window, and additional charges let you keep multiple zones up or mark separate groups in multi-pack encounters instead of waiting on cooldown. If you hit the right upgrades, you can put out an almost unending stream of Crit Darts, which is when the Spotter's squad-wide damage becomes absurd. Skip anything that does not feed crit, your gun damage is not the point.

The ground Crit Dart leaves a ~10-second AoE crit zone, and Critical Splash plus Potent Dart make that zone bigger and longer so the whole squad's fire crits.

The passive radar

The Spotter's quiet second job is map awareness. It passively detects both allies and enemies on a radar, which players describe as a roughly 35-meter radial ping every few seconds that blips enemies and squadmates at their position at the moment of the scan.

This is easy to overlook because it is not the flashy crit ability, but it makes the Spotter valuable beyond damage. The team always has a read on where threats are forming, which helps the squad position, avoid being flanked in the dark, and plan engagements before a swarm is on top of them. When you play Spotter, call out what the radar shows, you are the squad's eyes as much as its crit enabler.

The Falconer combo and the co-op role

The Spotter's best partner is the Falconer, and together they form the strongest two-class pairing in the game. The Spotter lays down crit, and the Falconer's Shock Drone delivers consistent, repeated hits that trigger those crits on every burst. Because the drone hits reliably and continuously, it converts your crit zone into guaranteed critical damage more efficiently than almost any other class can.

The lesson for how you play Spotter: your value is multiplicative, so set up your crit zones where your highest-damage teammates are working. Paint the ground where the Falconer's drone is hitting, where the Slicer is chaining, where the squad is focus-firing. Solo Spotter is fine, the marks still help against single high-health targets, and the radar keeps you safe, but the class is a force multiplier, and a force multiplier needs a force. Play it for the team's damage, not your own.

Lay your ground zones where your highest-damage teammates are firing to multiply the whole squad's output.

Habits that make a good Spotter

The Spotter has a low floor, anyone can throw a dart, but a high ceiling, and the gap between a mediocre and a great Spotter is all in positioning and timing.

Lead the swarm, do not chase it. Because the ground zone lasts around 10 seconds, the best darts are predictive: throw them where enemies will be, at chokepoints, in the path of a charging group, on the spot your squad is about to focus. A zone laid down a beat early catches the whole pack as it arrives; a zone thrown reactively onto enemies already scattering wastes most of its radius.

Sync your charges to the squad's burst, not your own. Your darts are worth the most when several guns are firing into them at once, so hold a charge for the moment your team commits to a target rather than spending it the instant it is available. A crit zone with nobody shooting into it is wasted uptime.

Use the radar to set up the next zone. The passive ping tells you where the next group is forming, so you can pre-place a dart before the fight reaches you. Treat the radar and the darts as one loop: read where threats are coming from, paint the ground there, call it out, and let the squad walk their fire into your zone. Done well, the Spotter quietly doubles a team's damage without ever topping the kill chart, which is exactly the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Spotter work? It marks targets for crits the whole squad benefits from. Direct hits mark one enemy; ground shots leave a ~10-second AoE crit zone.

Why shoot the ground? The ground throw creates a lasting AoE crit zone that buffs every enemy inside it, far better than a single-target stick.

Best build? Full crit: stack Critical Splash (ground AoE) and Potent Dart (duration), then mark duration and charges.

Is it good solo? It works, but it is a co-op force multiplier. Solo, only your gun benefits; in a squad, every gun in the zone crits.

What is the Spotter-Falconer combo? The best pairing: the Falconer's drone repeatedly triggers your crit marks, turning zones into guaranteed crit damage.

What does the passive radar do? It detects allies and enemies on a periodic radial ping, giving the squad threat awareness beyond the crit marks.
