FC 27 Release Date Was Sept 25: Is It Worth Buying Now?
The release date is behind us. The question now is which edition, on which console, and whether a Mixed Steam rating should scare you off.
VerdictWorth it if you play Ultimate Team all season: take the $74.99 Ultimate Edition on Steam before November 2. Career-only players and PS4, Xbox One or Switch 1 owners should try Lite first or wait.
FC 27 release date was September 25, 2026, so it has been out for a month, and Ultimate Edition owners started a week before that. Our call: worth buying now if Ultimate Team is your main mode, and the smart way in on Steam is the Ultimate Edition at $74.99 until November 2. If you only play Career, or you're on PS4, Xbox One or the first Switch, try the free Lite version or wait.

FC 27 release date and early access times
EA set the dates in its launch Pitch Notes on September 14. The PC times are in UTC; consoles unlocked at midnight local time.
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Web App | September 16, 17:00 UTC |
| Companion App | September 17, 17:00 UTC |
| Early access (Ultimate Edition) | PC September 17, 23:00 UTC; consoles September 18, 00:00 local |
| EA Play Pro (full game) | September 17, 23:00 UTC |
| EA Play 10-hour trial | September 18, 04:00 UTC |
| Worldwide launch | PC September 24, 23:00 UTC; consoles September 25, 00:00 local |
| FC 27 Lite (free) | September 25, 16:00 UTC |
Steam lists the PC version as released September 24 for that reason: the 23:00 UTC unlock lands on the 24th. It's the same launch.

Which edition is worth it now
Ultimate Plus is gone; EA sold it only from July 23 to August 31. That leaves Standard and Ultimate, and on Steam (US store, checked October 28) the gap between them is small for a few more days:
| Edition | Steam price | What you get now |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | The full game, all modes |
| Ultimate | $74.99 (normally $99.99, until November 2) | 6,000 FC Points over three months, an extra FUT Evolution slot, three ICONs/Heroes and 5-star staff in Manager Career, The Grounds cosmetics |
Five dollars for 6,000 FC Points is the whole argument. Steam sells 2,800 points on their own for $24.99, so if you were going to buy points at any point this season, Ultimate pays for itself on the first drop. The points arrive on your first login and then on the 15th of each month. What you no longer get: early access (it's over) and the Season 1 Premium Pass, which EA tied to Ultimate pre-orders only. Not a FUT player? Then the points are worth nothing to you, and Standard is the buy.
Your platform changes the answer
FC 27 is on the EA app, Steam, Epic, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and Switch 2. But The Grounds, EA's new "social football playground," and Clubs with it, run only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2. On PS4, Xbox One or the original Switch you pay full price for a game missing its headline new mode. The upgrade from PS4 to PS5, or Xbox One to Series X|S, is free, so a last-gen copy at least follows you to new hardware.

Is the Mixed Steam rating a warning?
Steam rates it Mixed: on October 29, 2026, 50% of 3,901 English reviews were positive, and 46% of the 6,363 reviews from the last 30 days. Read that as a split community, not a broken launch. EA changed how Ultimate Team progresses this year. The PlayStyles+ cap fell from five to three, there are about five fewer Campaign weeks, and the Store has fewer promotional Pack offers. In exchange, Rivals and Champions matches pay "several times more" coins than the roughly 500 to 600 a match earned in FC 26. Players who loved chasing a new promo every week feel the slowdown. Others have settled into it. One player on r/EASportsFC put it this way on October 27: "Considering rewards aren't worth it anyway, yall should try it, create a fun unique team, consider it almost like an RPG upgrading your team."

The October patches have been fixes, not rebalances. Title Update 1.0.3 on October 2 was a "Small Bug Fix Update." Then 1.0.4 on October 7 said outright that "there are no gameplay balance and tuning changes in this update." That patch did trim the flood of high-rated and high-potential generated players in Manager Career, and fixed a Liga MX season that restarted in May instead of mid-January. EA's later posts included a Launch Feedback Update on October 13, which called manual defending "one of the most discussed topics since launch" but promised only to keep monitoring it, and a developer update on The Grounds archetypes on October 19. Title Update 1.1.0 on October 27 again said "there are no gameplay balance and tuning changes in this update."
The rebalance has a date now. EA's October Gameplay Developer Notes on October 28 say "our next Title Update in mid-November will introduce our first set of gameplay balance changes for FC 27." That's Title Update v1.2.0, and EA lists fullback positioning, offside awareness, attacking AI runs, fewer kick-off goals and loose-ball player switching. EA calls the changes "subtle and targeted", so don't expect a different game.
What the launch trailer shows (and doesn't)
We stepped through EA's 1:42 launch trailer frame by frame. It opens in live action: at 0:05 a presenter in a headset stands in front of a wall of match screens and at 0:15 a young player checks his phone on a training pitch. In-game footage starts cutting in around 0:40, with a Champions League ball in front of a PSG crowd, and from there the two alternate: two presenters at a "LIVE NOW" desk at 0:45, a dribble in a packed stadium at 0:46, a diving keeper at 0:50, a street match in The Grounds at 0:52, campers watching a match projected onto a tent at 0:55 and a volley at 0:58. At 1:08 a player in a light-blue kit dribbles in a packed stadium; at 1:24 a player kneels over the ball as a keeper watches, and by 1:35 it's the logo and "PLAY NOW WITH ULTIMATE EDITION." The gameplay shots are a few seconds each, so the Steam screenshots and the free Lite build tell you more about how it plays.
Buy now or wait
- Buy Ultimate before November 2 if you play FUT through the season and would spend on points anyway.
- Buy Standard if you play Kick-Off, Career or The Grounds with friends and never touch points.
- Try first with FC 27 Lite (free on PS4, PS5, Xbox, EA app, Steam and Epic) if the Mixed rating worries you. The 10-hour EA Play trial opened on September 18, before launch, and EA's EA Play page sells trials as "up to 10 hours of select new games before launch", so don't count on it now.
- Wait if you're happy in FC 26 Career mode, or if the gameplay itself is what's putting you off. Title Update v1.2.0 lands in mid-November with EA's first balance changes, so a couple of weeks shows you whether they fix what bothers you. The first FUT Series arrives in Season 3 in December, and Valve's Winter Sale opens December 17. Nothing official says FC 27 will be discounted in it, so treat that as a maybe.
If you play mostly on a couch with friends and want something other than football, our co-op picks are worth a look before you pay full price.
How we checked this
On October 28, 2026 we read EA's editions FAQ, its launch Pitch Notes and the Title Update 1.0.4 notes on ea.com, the FC 27 Steam page and Steam's appdetails data (US store), the review rows on the Steam page, and the r/EASportsFC subreddit. On October 29 we re-read the Steam review rows and the Ultimate Edition price, went through EA's FC 27 news list (the October 13 Launch Feedback Update, Title Update 1.1.0 and the October Gameplay Developer Notes) and EA's EA Play page. We stepped through the official launch trailer every ten seconds for the timestamps above, then re-checked 0:30 to 1:08 at 2- to 6-second steps on October 29. We haven't played FC 27 ourselves, so this page doesn't score it.
