DayZ Badlands Price: $24.99, and You Need DayZ First

Bohemia's desert expansion is the biggest DayZ map yet. The launch discount is small and ends soon; the Mixed reviews matter more than the $2.50.

VerdictBuy it at $22.49 before October 29 if you already play DayZ and want a fresh map after the 1.30 wipe; otherwise there is no rush.

DayZ Badlands price on Steam is $24.99, and it is DLC: you need the DayZ base game to play it. Until October 29, a 10% launch discount brings it to $22.49. That buys Nasdara, which Bohemia calls "the largest terrain we've ever worked on for DayZ," at 267 km².

What $24.99 gets you

Bohemia set the price on October 2 at "approximately $24.99," with a note that "regional pricing may apply." The expansion launched on October 15 alongside Update 1.30, which brought "a full wipe across all platforms." The paid part is the map and what lives on it:

Motorbikes and the reworked skins came with Update 1.30 for the base game, so you get those without buying Badlands. Base-game owners who want both expansions can also look at the Hot & Cool Bundle, which pairs Badlands with DayZ Frostline.

The release trailer

Bohemia's release trailer runs 2:50. At 0:05 infected sprint through a village street, at 0:25 a survivor mounts a blue motorbike, and at 0:35 the camera pulls over a long road through flowering trees toward the mountains. A rider stops at an old fuel station at 0:45, and at 1:15 it cuts to a wide view of pine scrub under bare ridges. It sells the size of the map more than the new systems.

Steam's verdict is Mixed so far. The most helpful positive review we found is short and to the point: "Good DLC, very unique and cool way to change up the flow/feeling of DayZ. Beware of sun stroke, it is no joke!" (review). Our read: the discount is too small to rush for, but if you were going to buy Badlands for the post-wipe start anyway, October 29 is the line. If you'd rather wait for a bigger cut, our Steam sale calendar has the dates, and our base-building and survival picks and co-op list cover other ways to play with a squad.
