Road to Vostok Nomads are the friendly faction that arrived with Build 2 on September 30, 2026, and they changed the feel of maps that used to be quiet. This guide covers only what the developer has written about them in the Build 2 changelog and the two hotfixes that followed, as of October 8: reputation, spawns, gatherings, and the Nomad features that are still on the way.
TL;DR: Nomads are Build 2's friendly faction, with their own reputation system. Damaging a Nomad now costs 20 reputation (up from 10 in Hotfix 0.2.0.3). Nomad Gatherings stop hostile AI from spawning. Two hotfixes made Nomad spawns rarer after players hit nonstop AI vs. AI fights, and the developer says more Nomad features, plus shelter features for them, are coming in the next Build 2 content patches.
What are Road to Vostok Nomads? (quick answer)
Nomads are a friendly AI faction added in Road to Vostok's Build 2, a free Early Access update. In the developer's words, the build's "main goal" was "to introduce AI vs. AI combat to the game and friendly faction called Nomads." Nomads come with a reputation system, a gathering event, and a tooltip that shows each Nomad's nickname.
Here is the official Early Access trailer from the developer's YouTube channel, which shows the game Build 2 builds on:
Build 2 is the second phase of Road to Vostok's Early Access. Steam describes the game as a "hardcore single-player survival game". It comes from developer Antti (Road to Vostok Ltd.) and launched on Steam on April 7, 2026 at $19.99. If you have not played since launch, our Road to Vostok Build 2 overview lists everything else in the update, from the Bogeyman boss to the Bridge and Airfield maps.
Key takeaways
- Nomads are friendly, but you can still hurt them, and it costs reputation: 20 points per hit since Hotfix 0.2.0.3, up from 10
- Nomad Gatherings prevent hostile AI from spawning, per the 0.2.0.0 changelog
- AI fights AI now, and Nomads are part of that, so Bandits and Nomads can clash without you
- Two hotfixes (0.2.0.3 and 0.2.0.5) adjusted Nomad spawn randomization so these fights happen less often
- Shelter features for Nomads and "additional Nomad features" did not make the Build 2 launch and are planned for the next content patches
Road to Vostok Nomads reputation: what the changelog says
The Build 2 changelog adds a "Nomad reputation system." It does not explain the system's thresholds or what each level unlocks, and we will not guess. What is documented is the cost of hurting them.
In Hotfix 0.2.0.3, the developer changed one line: "Causing damage to Nomads reduces more reputation [10->20]." So a stray shot into a Nomad group now costs twice what it did in the first days of Build 2. Check what you are aiming at before you fire, especially in the busy fights covered below.
The same hotfix also fixed two problems that hit friendly encounters: AI could still fire at the player when interacting with a trader, and players could get stuck on certain Nomads at the Outpost map.
Hotfix 0.2.0.5 added "Nomad nicknames (Tooltip)," so individual Nomads now carry names when you look at them. It's a small touch, but it makes a faction you cannot shoot freely feel less like scenery.

Nomad Gatherings and the AI vs. AI fights
Build 2's other headline feature is AI vs. AI combat, and Nomads sit in the middle of it. The changelog also raised the number of active AI: Border Zone went from 3 to 4, Vostok from 3 to 5. The developer later wrote that the active AI count is "sometimes x2 compared to the Build 1."
Nomad Gatherings is the calm side of this. It's listed as a new event, and the changelog states plainly that "Nomad Gatherings prevents hostile AI from spawning." The changelog also notes that AI groups near fire sources will light fires on their own.
The changelog does not say when gatherings happen. Players on the game's subreddit say the in-game events list answers it: in a thread asking why no gathering had appeared, u/OGMinorian replied, "If you look under events, you can read that the gatherings happen on saturdays." That is a player report, not a changelog line, so check the events list in your own game.
The busy side got feedback fast. In the notes on Hotfix 0.2.0.3, the developer said AI vs. AI turned Area 05 into what felt like a "constant warzone" for some players, because the amount of fighting is "tied to RNG (how many Nomads there are)." The notes singled out Village and School, maps where "Nomads and Bandits spawn relatively close together." They also confirmed high-end weapon attachments were spawning on Bandits and Nomads by mistake, which created "end-game loot" on early maps. That loot was removed in the same hotfix.
Players were split on the change in the first days. In a r/RoadtoVostokGame thread titled "What do you think about the Nomads", u/Wesutt wrote: "In areas where I just want to travel through it helps to see a friendly AI, Vostok is already intense enough." u/jewylookingguy saw it differently: "Sounded cool on paper, but for me it shifts the whole vibe of the game so much."
The response came in two steps. Hotfix 0.2.0.3 added "Additional Nomad randomization to make spawning occur less often." The next day, Hotfix 0.2.0.5 said the previous attempt "went too far" and added a "Small increase for Nomad spawn randomization," which the developer described as finding the "sweet spot." Both hotfixes kept existing saves compatible.

What is still coming for Nomads
Build 2 shipped incomplete on purpose. The release post said "some planned elements" were still missing, "mainly new trader tasks & shelter features for Nomads," to be patched "in the following weeks."

After Hotfix 0.2.0.3, the developer listed what those main patches contain: they "fill out all the tasks for the new traders (Driver / Hunter), add the missing Airfield buildings and the additional Nomad features that didn't quite make it." Hotfix 0.2.0.5 called itself "one more hotfix before those two main content patches."

A community post on the game's subreddit, quoting the developer's Discord, gives target dates of Friday, October 9 for the first patch (0.2.1.0, with "Few additional Nomad features") and Friday, October 16 for the second (0.2.2.0, with the "Rest of Nomad features"), marked "may be subject to change." That schedule has not been posted on Steam, so treat it as a target. If you're reading this after October 9, check the Road to Vostok news page on Steam for the 0.2.1.0 notes before assuming any detail above still applies.
After that, the developer says Build 3 is "all about" progression content, quests and missions, and "comes at the end of this year like promised in the roadmap."

Our take: is Road to Vostok worth playing with Build 2?
This take rests on the changelogs, developer notes and player posts cited above. Steam reviews sit at Very Positive, with 9,135 reviews as of October 8, 2026, and Nomads were the stated "main goal" of Build 2. The developer has also written, "I fully recognize that many people are looking for more progression-based content," adding that "this build might not deliver on that aspect." If you want quests, wait for Build 3. If you want maps that feel more alive and less predictable, Build 2 delivers that now, sometimes more than you'd like on Village and School.

What happens if you shoot a Nomad in Road to Vostok? You lose Nomad reputation. Hotfix 0.2.0.3 doubled the penalty for damaging Nomads, from 10 to 20 reputation, so friendly fire costs more than it did at launch. The changelogs do not say what low reputation leads to.
