GTA 6 vs GTA 5: compare the map, protagonists, prices, platforms, heists, and every GTA VI detail Rockstar has confirmed before launch for buyers.

GTA 6 vs GTA 5 is a comparison with one important limit: GTA VI has not launched yet. This is the confirmed difference between Rockstar's next game and 2013's Grand Theft Auto V, using official material wherever it exists and a clearly labelled community measurement where Rockstar never published one.
The useful answer is narrower than the rumor cycle. We can compare the settings, named protagonists, prices, platforms, release history, and the gameplay shown in official trailers. We cannot honestly compare GTA VI's final map area, full mission structure, progression, vehicle roster, or online mode yet. This page is meant to be updated when Rockstar publishes more or the game launches.

TL;DR: GTA V has three protagonists in Los Santos and Blaine County, launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, and has since reached PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. GTA VI has two confirmed protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, in Leonida and Vice City. It is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, at $79.99 Standard or $99.99 Ultimate. Rockstar has not published a final GTA VI map measurement or confirmed its online mode.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5: quick answer
The confirmed GTA 6 vs GTA 5 difference is a change of place, cast, generation, and launch price. GTA V is a finished game with a documented release ladder and a live online mode. GTA VI is a pre-launch single-player product listing with two named leads, a Florida-inspired setting, official gameplay footage, and several important systems still unannounced.
Rockstar's own description is a useful boundary: GTA VI follows Jason and Lucia as "an easy score goes wrong" and a conspiracy spreads across Leonida. The official page calls Leonida "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America." That confirms the premise and tone, not every system the finished game will contain.
GODEEPER: The GTA 6 complete guide keeps the live release date, map regions, character details, prices, trailers, and confirmed mechanics in one place. It is the better page to bookmark as Rockstar adds information.
Map and setting
GTA V is set in Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County in the fictional state of San Andreas, Rockstar's version of Southern California. GTA VI returns to Vice City inside the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar's Florida-inspired setting. The trailers and official site also identify other Leonida regions, but the precise final boundaries are not a published map document yet.
| Comparison point | GTA V | GTA VI |
|---|---|---|
| Main setting | Los Santos and Blaine County, San Andreas | Vice City and wider Leonida |
| Real-world inspiration | Southern California | Florida |
| Official area figure | None published by Rockstar | None published by Rockstar |
| What can be measured responsibly | A community map measurement totals 75.84 km², including water, with 48.15 km² of land | No comparable official or final measurement |
The GTA V number needs a label. A detailed GTA Forums measurement by KeWiS calculated 29.28 square miles, or 75.84 square kilometres, for the full map and 48.15 square kilometres of land. Rockstar did not publish that figure. For GTA VI, this article stops at the official descriptions rather than turning fan estimates into a confirmed difference.
That makes the map-size comparison less satisfying, but more useful. If a future Rockstar map page gives GTA VI an area, the two figures can be compared using the same method. Until then, "GTA VI is X times bigger" is not a confirmed fact.
GODEEPER: The GTA 6 guide's map section lists every named Leonida region Rockstar has shown and separates official descriptions from third-party estimates.

Protagonists and story structure
GTA V gives the player three protagonists: Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips. Its story is built around switching among them as their separate lives collide and their heists become connected. Rockstar's official GTA V material describes the trio undertaking a series of heists across Los Santos and Blaine County.
GTA VI has two confirmed protagonists: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. Rockstar presents them as partners in a crime story that starts with a job going wrong and expands into a conspiracy across Leonida. Trailer 2 and the later Extended Look show the pair operating together, including footage of character switching during action and a bank heist sequence. Those are shown moments, not a complete description of every mission rule.
This is one of the clearest GTA 6 vs GTA 5 differences available before launch. The count is confirmed, the names are confirmed, and the broad relationship is confirmed. The final story length, mission count, branching structure, and full cast are not. The GTA 6 complete guide tracks the character evidence without filling those gaps with leaks.

Price and editions
The current United States price gap is straightforward. Rockstar's official GTA VI listings show a $79.99 Standard Edition and a $99.99 Ultimate Edition. The PlayStation listing describes the Ultimate Edition as the base game plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, and Rockstar Support lists the pre-order Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+ among the launch offer details.
GTA V has a different price story because its storefront products now cover several generations. The current Steam listing for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced is $29.99 and includes Enhanced, Legacy, and the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack. The current PlayStation and Xbox listings checked for this article show the cross-generation game at $39.99 before temporary offers. Rockstar's own store also lists GTA V at $39.99.
Those are current US storefront snapshots checked on September 25, 2026, not an inflation-adjusted comparison of original launch prices. GTA V also had a $79.99 Special Edition and $149.99 Collector's Edition in 2013, so "GTA VI costs more" depends on whether the comparison is standard-to-standard, premium-to-premium, or current-to-current.
The clean standard-edition comparison is GTA V's current $29.99 Steam price or $39.99 console listing versus GTA VI's $79.99 Standard Edition. The clean premium comparison is less direct because GTA V's original collector package and GTA VI's current Ultimate package are built differently.
The GTA 6 release and price checklist is the current reference for the storefront details and pre-order bonuses.
Platforms and release history
GTA V's biggest confirmed platform difference is its long release ladder. It launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013. Rockstar then released it for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 18, 2014, PC on April 14, 2015, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on March 15, 2022. Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced arrived on Steam on March 4, 2025.
GTA VI currently has one announced launch date and two announced console families: November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar's official page and support article do not list a PC version or PC date. That is an unannounced platform, not a cancelled one, so this comparison should not turn Rockstar's previous PC release pattern into a promise.
For players deciding what the generation change means, the practical answer is simple: GTA V is the cross-generation game you can buy on current consoles and PC now. GTA VI is the new console launch currently scheduled for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The WARDOGS maps guide and WARDOGS complete guide are useful examples of how we label live platform and map information elsewhere on the site, but they do not provide evidence about GTA VI.
Heists and confirmed gameplay systems
GTA V has a documented heist structure in both its story and GTA Online. Rockstar's launch-era material describes the three protagonists switching during a series of story heists. The official Online Heists announcement later added four-player cooperative, multipart raids and robberies across Los Santos and Blaine County.
GTA VI has shown a bank heist, action with Lucia and Jason, character switching, an AI-controlled partner, calls and texts, seat-swapping, wildlife, and weather in the official material collected by the pillar hub. The Extended Look is explicitly captured from in-game footage on PS5, and Trailer 2 is also described as captured entirely in-game. These are the systems and scenes this article treats as confirmed.
What is not confirmed is just as important. Rockstar has not published the complete GTA VI heist system, online or multiplayer details, mission count, progression structure, property system, customization scope, or final vehicle and weapon list. The fact that GTA V has a particular version of GTA Online does not prove GTA VI will launch with the same mode or the same rules.
GODEEPER: If cooperative robbery design is the part of the comparison you care about, the current best co-op games roundup gives that question a broader answer without treating GTA VI's unannounced online plans as fact.
What we still cannot compare yet
The honest GTA 6 vs GTA 5 answer has a large unknown column. We cannot give a verified GTA VI map area, a final graphics or performance comparison, a complete mission list, a campaign length, a progression tree, a full vehicle or weapon roster, or an online launch plan from the official sources available today.
That is why this article does not repeat pre-launch claims as confirmed differences. The GTA 6 complete guide keeps a running list of open questions, including the map measurement and online status. When Rockstar answers one of them, this comparison can add it with a source and a date.
This also explains the title's wording. "Every confirmed difference" means every difference this research can support as of September 25, 2026. It does not mean the final game has been fully documented before release.
