Valheim

This Valheim Ashlands guide exists because the biome stops being forgiving the moment you land. Every surface wants to set you on fire, the Charred aren't going to politely queue up one at a time like Meadows boars, and the biome's own boss, Fader, has a summoning ritual you'll only find by getting lucky with a fortress layout. What follows covers what actually kills you here, what to wear so it doesn't, and how to get Fader into a fight in the first place.

TL;DR: The Ashlands sits at the southern edge of the map, all lava and Charred enemies (Warrior, Twitcher, Morgen, Asksvin). Grausten is the fireproof stone tier, Flametal is the top-tier ore, and both get worked at the Black Forge. Fader summons by placing 3 Bells (3 Bell Fragments each) in a coliseum found via a Vegvisir inside a Charred Fortress, and its 8-attack kit includes an unblockable fire-line move that only fires between 5% and 85% boss HP. It drops 5 Fader Relics and a trophy worth mounting.

Valheim Ashlands guide: what actually matters here (quick answer)

The Ashlands is a lava-terrain biome south of the map defended by Charred enemies, and it gates its boss, Fader, behind finding a coliseum arena and building 3 summoning Bells. Fire resistance from Flametal armor is not optional gear here, it's the baseline for surviving contact with the terrain itself.

Key takeaways

  • Grausten is the Ashlands' fireproof building stone, mined with a Blackmetal pickaxe.
  • Flametal is the top ore tier, and Flametal gear can be socketed with gems for blood, storm, or nature magic upgrades.
  • The Black Forge crafts and repairs both Mistlands and Ashlands gear, so you don't need a second station if you already built one.
  • Morgen ambushes from underground and closes distance with a roll. Fighting it in open ground beats fighting it near rubble piles.
  • Fader requires finding a coliseum (via Vegvisir in a Charred Fortress) and placing 3 Bells, each needing 3 Bell Fragments.
  • Fader's fire-line attack only triggers between 5% and 85% of its health, so the very start and very end of the fight are actually safer than the middle.

Overview

This guide covers the Ashlands biome as it's stood since its full release on May 14, 2024, which is not a beta or test-branch state, it's been the shipped version of the update for a while now. What's changed more recently is the combat system underneath it: patch 0.221.4's "Call to Arms" overhaul added an Adrenaline resource, perfect dodge rolls that refund stamina, and stamina-free perfect blocks, all of which apply to Ashlands fights including Fader.

What this covers: the biome's enemies, its two new material tiers, the Fader fight itself, and what to actually wear before you go in. What it doesn't cover: base-building layouts or a full walkthrough of every Charred Fortress room, since fortress interiors are procedurally varied enough that a fixed walkthrough goes stale fast.

Ashlands enemies and what actually threatens you

The Ashlands is a crescent-shaped island biome at the map's southern edge. Lava dominates the center, and the terrain gets more hostile the further in you push.

  • Charred Warrior: the biome's standard melee unit, and the one you'll see most. Straightforward but dangerous in groups.
  • Charred Twitcher: weaker individually, spawns from Monuments of Torment, throws rocks at range before closing to melee.
  • Morgen: the Ashlands' answer to a Troll. It ambushes from underground and rolls to close distance fast. Drops Morgen Heart and Morgen Sinew.
  • Asksvin: huge, mutated Neck-like enemies that spawn in packs of up to 2 per zone. They're the only tameable creature in the biome, using Smoke Puffs and a saddle.

Official Valheim Ashlands trailer still showing a fiery Charred enemy engulfed in flame charging at a player with a shield, lava terrain in the background Charred enemies are built around fire damage on top of their physical attacks, which is why fire resistance gear matters more here than in any earlier biome.

Morgen is the one that catches people off guard. It's not patrolling in the open the way a Troll does, it's waiting underground near rubble and charging the moment you're close enough. Fighting it somewhere open, away from the piles it likes to burst out of, turns an ambush into a straight fight.

Materials, the Black Forge, and Flametal gear

Two new material tiers anchor Ashlands progression. Grausten is the fireproof stone-equivalent to black marble, mined from rock and ruins with a Blackmetal pickaxe, and it's what you'll build with if you want a structure that survives being near lava. Ashwood, cut from Scorched Trees with any axe, covers furniture and structural pieces the way normal wood does elsewhere.

Flametal is the ore that actually matters for combat. It's the basis for the update's full weapon and armor lineup (the patch added more than 30 weapons and 3 armor sets), and Flametal weapons can be combined with Bloodstone, Iolite, or Jade gems for blood, storm, or nature magic effects. All of this gets crafted and upgraded at the Black Forge, the same station Mistlands gear uses, so if you've already built one you're not starting from zero.

Flametal armor is the actual answer to "how do I stop dying to the environment." Its fire resistance cuts lava damage and extends how long you last near boiling water, both of which come up constantly here in a way they simply don't in earlier biomes.

GODEEPER: If you haven't cleared all seven main bosses yet, Fader is the last one before Deep North, and the order you fight them in changes how prepared you'll be for this fight. Valheim Boss Order: All 7 Bosses & How to Summon Them →

How to summon and beat Fader

Fader doesn't have a simple altar-and-item summon like the earlier bosses. You need to find its arena first, and that's gated behind exploration, not just a checklist.

  1. Find a Charred Fortress. These are the large Ashlands structures where Bell Fragments and other endgame materials drop.
  2. Look for a Vegvisir inside the fortress's central tower. Roughly half of Charred Fortresses generate with one, and it reveals the location of a coliseum arena elsewhere in the biome.
  3. Collect 9 Bell Fragments total (3 per Bell, 3 Bells needed) from fortress enemies and chests.
  4. Place all 3 Bells around the coliseum to trigger the fight.

Once the fight starts, Fader has eight distinct attacks worth knowing before you walk in:

  • Bite: a 40-degree arc, 3-second cooldown, triggers within 9m.
  • Claw swipe (left and right): 65-degree arc, 3-second cooldown per side, triggers within 9m.
  • Spin: 8.5m radius, 20-second cooldown, triggers only if you're within 8m.
  • Fire line: a 17m unblockable line that leaves 14 seconds of lingering fire, 25-second cooldown, and it only fires between 5% and 85% of Fader's remaining HP.
  • Meteor: 10 falling meteors, each with a 5m green-flame impact radius.
  • Fissure (ground slam): drags its paw to leave 12-16 flame circles that erupt into spikes and a flame pool strong enough to kill even in full Flametal armor, so treat the windup as a hard "get out" cue.
  • Roar: fires glowing orbs that summon Charred Warriors and Marksmen to fight alongside Fader, capped at seven of each. Ignoring this one lets the arena crowd up fast.
  • Wall of fire: draws a ring of fire circles around you that closes in clockwise, punishing players who stand still through the whole fight.

That fire-line detail matters more than it looks. Since it can't trigger below 5% HP or above 85%, the very opening seconds and the kill window are both safer than the mid-fight stretch, which is backwards from how most Valheim boss fights escalate.

Win, and Fader drops 5 Fader Relics and 1 Fader Trophy at a 100% rate. Mount the trophy at a Sacrificial Stones altar for Forsaken Power: fire resistance plus a 100% Adrenaline gain boost and 50% reduced stagger meter, running for 300 seconds.

Three armored Vikings walking through a glowing orange portal ring at night, one carrying a shield and sword, one wielding a two-handed sword, one holding a bow Bring a full party if you can. Fader's arc-based melee attacks and the fire-line's unblockable range both punish a solo fighter more than a spread-out group.

GODEEPER: Fader isn't the endgame stopping point either. Deep North is the actual final biome, and it's worth knowing what's coming before you fully gear up for Ashlands alone. Valheim 1.0 Release Date: September 9 with Deep North Biome →

Tips

Don't skip Flametal armor for "just one more Blackmetal run"

The fire resistance isn't a marginal upgrade in this biome, it's the difference between casually walking near lava and slowly draining your health bar for no reason.

Fight Morgen in the open

If you spot rubble piles that look suspiciously placed, assume a Morgen is waiting nearby and pull it into open ground before committing to the fight.

Save meteor dodges for movement, not blocking

Fader's meteor attack covers a wide area with multiple impact zones. Blocking one hit doesn't help when three more are landing near you a second later, so treat it as a "get out of the zone" cue, not a parry opportunity.

Bring food that offsets fire damage

Since nearly every enemy and half the terrain in this biome deals fire damage, a food loadout built around raw HP and fire mitigation outperforms one built for physical damage reduction alone.

Common mistakes

  • Walking into Ashlands with pre-Mistlands gear. The Charred hit hard enough that anything short of Mistlands-tier armor gets you killed fast.
  • Fighting Morgen next to the rubble it ambushes from. It'll just retreat and reset the charge. Pull it into the open first.
  • Assuming Fader's fire line is blockable. It isn't. Dodge rolling through the window is the only real counter.
  • Skipping the Vegvisir search and wandering for the coliseum manually. The arena location isn't marked without it, and blind searching wastes far more time than clearing one more fortress tower.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you summon Fader in Valheim? Place 3 Bells around the coliseum arena inside a Charred Fortress. Each Bell needs 3 Bell Fragments, which drop from enemies and chests inside Charred Fortresses.

Where do you find the Fader arena? Inside a Charred Fortress's central tower, gated behind a Vegvisir that reveals the coliseum location. Roughly half of Charred Fortresses generate with one.

What does Fader drop in Valheim? 5 Fader Relics and 1 Fader Trophy at a 100% drop rate. Mounting the trophy at Sacrificial Stones grants Forsaken Power: fire resistance plus a 100% Adrenaline boost and 50% reduced stagger for 300 seconds.

What is the strongest enemy in the Ashlands besides Fader? Morgen hits hardest for its tier. It ambushes from underground and rolls to close distance fast, and fighting it in the open where you can see the charge coming is much safer than near rubble it can burst from.

What armor do you need for the Ashlands? Flametal armor, crafted and upgraded at the Black Forge. Its fire resistance cuts lava damage significantly and extends how long you can survive near boiling water, which matters constantly in this biome.

Is Ashlands the last biome in Valheim? No. Deep North follows it as the final biome, added with the 1.0 release on September 9, 2026. Ashlands is the second-to-last stop before the current endgame.
