About the game

Valheim

Two things most Valheim iron farming guides still get wrong: that you need a Bronze Pickaxe to mine Muddy Scrap Piles, and that raw metal can never go through a portal. Neither is true anymore, and the second one changed with an update most guides haven't caught up to. For the wider progression path, see the Valheim complete guide hub.

Updated 2026-10-10: Rechecked every claim against the Valheim Wiki and the patch notes through 1.0.17 (6 October). Corrected the Ashlands iron note, removed unsourced advice, and added the Oozer and Mistlands scrap sources.

TL;DR: The most reliable Scrap Iron route is clearing Sunken Crypts in the Swamp with the reusable Swamp Key from The Elder. Crypt piles average 4.3 Scrap Iron each, rare buried Swamp piles average 6, and crypt chests have a 19% chance to hold 10 to 20. A Portal Stone can carry ore, but both endpoints need to support cargo for a metal-carrying round trip.

How do you farm iron in Valheim? (quick answer)

Iron Scrap comes mainly from Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome, both from chests and by mining Muddy Scrap Piles inside. Rare piles can also appear underground elsewhere in the Swamp. You need a Swamp Key to open a crypt's gate, and The Elder, the game's second boss, is the only source of that key. If you are starting a fresh world, the best Valheim seeds guide can help you choose a useful early map.

Scrap Iron yields: Crypts vs buried Swamp piles

The wiki's per-pile averages favor buried Swamp piles, but those piles are rare and generally require the Wishbone to locate. Sunken Crypts are the better repeatable route: their scrap piles are found inside the dungeon, and chests can add another Iron Scrap roll. The yield figures below are per pile or chest, not a timed farming comparison.

SourceWiki yieldWhat it means for the route
Muddy Scrap Pile inside a Sunken Crypt30 segments; 14.29% Scrap Iron drop chance per segment; 4.3 Scrap Iron average per pileClear every pile while searching the crypt rooms.
Buried Muddy Scrap Pile elsewhere in the Swamp20 segments; 29.7% Scrap Iron drop chance per segment; 6 Scrap Iron average per pileBetter average yield per pile, but it is a rare supplemental find rather than a route to plan around.
Sunken Crypt chest10 to 20 Scrap Iron at a 19% chanceCheck crypt chests as well as mining piles; the drop is not guaranteed in every chest.

For a focused iron run, choose a Swamp with several Sunken Crypts and empty each one completely. If the Wishbone reveals a buried pile during the trip, mine it too. The wiki gives per-object yields and describes buried piles as rare, but it does not publish a time-per-hour comparison between routes.

Key takeaways

  • Iron Scrap is a Swamp resource, found in Sunken Crypt chests and Muddy Scrap Piles, with rare buried piles outside crypts.
  • The Swamp Key only drops from The Elder, the second boss, killed in the Black Forest. It's reusable, not consumed when you open a gate.
  • Any pickaxe mines Muddy Scrap Piles, not specifically Bronze. They only have 5 HP per segment.
  • Crypts aren't melee-only. Any weapon works; blunt is a strong pick against Blobs specifically since they resist slash/pierce, but Draugr take even damage from all physical types.
  • Ashlands does not replace the Swamp route. Ancient pots there drop Iron at a low chance, and Charred Fortresses give Molten cores and chest loot, not Iron Scrap.
  • A Portal Stone can carry ore and metal, but a wooden portal endpoint still blocks a return trip while you carry those items. Use Portal Stones at both ends for a round trip with cargo.

Overview

In the current Valheim 1.0 build, the Swamp remains the main Iron Scrap route: Sunken Crypts contain Muddy Scrap Piles and occasional chest loot, while buried piles elsewhere in the Swamp are rare. None of the official patch notes from 1.0.10 through 1.0.17 (the latest, on 6 October 2026) list an iron, crypt or Swamp Key change; the only portal-related entry is a 1.0.14 fix for terrain edits that caused portaling issues in multiplayer. Two smaller scrap sources exist as well: the wiki says Oozers can rarely drop Scrap Iron at around a 30% rate, and later in the game Ancient swords and Ancient armor in the Mistlands can be mined for it.

Iron is also where the grind starts to bite. One player on r/valheim wrote that 300+ iron spent running the Swamp for hours "just vanished in 1 minute making new gear". Knowing exactly what the game requires, and what it doesn't, cuts a lot of wasted trips out.

The Swamp Key: the one requirement that actually gates iron

Before you can open a single Sunken Crypt, you need a Swamp Key. It drops from The Elder, the second boss fight, located in the Black Forest biome. The wiki lists The Elder as its only source, and the key is what unlocks the crypt gates. The good news is that it is reusable: the wiki says it must be in your inventory the first time you open each crypt gate, is no longer needed to re-enter that same crypt, and can be used an unlimited number of times.

Step-by-step: an efficient iron farming route

  1. Kill The Elder first if you haven't. Nothing below matters until you have a Swamp Key in your inventory.
  2. Bring Poison resistance mead or a Root Mask and pack food before diving into the Swamp. The wiki recommends the mead or mask because Sunken Crypts spawn poisonous Blobs.
  3. Clear every Muddy Scrap Pile inside a crypt, not just the chests. Piles only have 5 HP per segment, so they're fast to break with any pickaxe, and skipping them leaves scrap on the table.
  4. Expect a wide yield range per crypt, because chest loot and the number of Muddy Scrap Piles vary. Don't assume every crypt gives the same amount.
  5. Smelt the scrap with Coal. A Smelter turns Scrap Iron into Iron and holds up to 10 ores and 20 coal at a time, so stock coal before a smelting session.
  6. Plan your hauling route home, since standard portals won't carry raw ore back to base (see the portal section below for the one exception). The Valheim base-building guide has related storage and outpost planning advice.

Two myths this guide is correcting

Myth: you need a Bronze Pickaxe to mine scrap piles

Any pickaxe works. Muddy Scrap Piles have only 5 HP per segment, so the starting Antler Pickaxe, repairable at any workbench, mines them exactly as well as a Bronze Pickaxe does. The wiki calls the Antler pickaxe the weakest pickaxe in the game but "sufficient for mining iron", so a Bronze Pickaxe is not required for scrap piles. A lot of older guides imply otherwise.

Myth: Sunken Crypts are melee-only

They aren't. Any weapon works inside a crypt, there's no game-enforced restriction. What's true is that blunt weapons are commonly recommended against one specific crypt enemy: Blobs, which resist slash and pierce damage but are weak to blunt hits. Draugr, the crypt's other common enemy, don't share that profile, they take roughly even damage from all three physical types, so weapon choice against them comes down to preference rather than a damage-type edge. That blunt recommendation is a tactical tip players pass along for Blobs specifically, not a rule the game imposes on the whole dungeon. The Valheim weapons tier list has the broader damage-type context. Crypts are also dimly lit in places, so a light source or the Dverger Circlet helps more than weapon choice does.

Does Ashlands change iron farming?

Not for the main Iron Scrap route. The wiki's Scrap Iron page still names Sunken Crypts as the primary source in the Swamp. Charred Fortresses list Molten cores, and their chests can hold Iolite, Bloodstone and Jade, none of which substitute for Iron Scrap. The Ancient pot page does list Iron as a drop (3.85% chance, 1 to 2 pieces) from pots in Charred Ruins and Putrid Holes, so Ashlands can provide a little supplemental Iron, but it does not replace the Swamp Scrap route.

What Ashlands does change is portal logistics, which matters a lot for anyone who's spent hours hauling scrap out of the Swamp by foot or boat.

Can you finally teleport iron? The Portal Stone changes the math

The long-standing Valheim rule is that ore and metal cannot go through a wooden portal. The Portal Stone allows ores and metals, dragon eggs, Hildir's chests, and Mechanical Springs to pass. The portal you enter must support the cargo: a Portal Stone linked to a wooden portal lets you travel one way with metal, but you cannot return through the wooden endpoint while carrying it. For a two-way haul, use a Portal Stone at each end.

The Portal Stone is a built-in structure, not a workaround or exploit. A wooden portal remains useful for the return trip after you deposit the metal at the other end.

Our take

The Swamp route is still the cheapest way into iron, and the wiki numbers show why it feels like a grind: a crypt pile averages about 4.3 Scrap Iron, so you need several crypts to afford a set of gear. Players feel the same pressure; a separate r/valheim thread says "Getting iron wasn't even that hard... Until I've seen the upgrade requirements." Plan for the upgrade costs, not just the first set.

Tips

Don't skip food and poison prep before a crypt run

Poison resistance matters more than which pickaxe you carry, because Blobs inside the crypts spawn poison clouds.

Bring a spare pickaxe if yours is close to breaking

Since crypt trips tend to run long once you're clearing every scrap pile in sight, having a backup means one broken tool doesn't end the run early.

Track your key, not your route

Because the Swamp Key is reusable and never consumed, the actual bottleneck is having killed The Elder, not finding more keys. Don't waste time looking for a second one.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming you need a specific pickaxe tier for scrap piles. Any pickaxe handles their 5 HP per segment fine.
  • Treating crypts as melee-only. No weapon type is blocked, blunt is just efficient against common Swamp enemies.
  • Assuming Ashlands replaces the Swamp route. Charred Fortresses give different materials, and Ancient pots only drop Iron at a low rate.
  • Assuming every portal accepts metal. A Portal Stone accepts it, while a wooden endpoint blocks a return trip with cargo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you farm iron in Valheim? Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome, from chests and Muddy Scrap Piles inside. Muddy Scrap Piles can rarely also appear underground in the Swamp outside crypts.

How do you get the Swamp Key in Valheim? It drops from The Elder, the second boss, found in the Black Forest. It's the only way to get one in vanilla play, and it's reusable, not consumed on use.

What pickaxe do you need to farm iron in Valheim? Any pickaxe works. Muddy Scrap Piles have only 5 HP per segment, so the starting Antler Pickaxe mines them just as well as a Bronze Pickaxe.

Are Sunken Crypts melee-only in Valheim? No, that's a myth. Any weapon works inside crypts. Blunt is commonly recommended against Blobs specifically since they resist slash and pierce; Draugr take even damage from all physical types, so that reasoning doesn't apply to them.

Can you teleport iron through portals in Valheim? Wooden portals still block ore and metal. Portal Stones accept them, but a round trip carrying metal requires a Portal Stone at both ends.

Does Ashlands add another way to get iron in Valheim? Not a replacement for the Swamp Iron Scrap route. Ancient pots in Charred Ruins and Putrid Holes can drop Iron at a low chance, but Charred Fortresses are for Molten cores and chest loot.
