Valheim Nord Weapons Ranked: Best Picks + Frostfire Crossbow

The Frostfire Crossbow hits harder on paper than the Nord one, right up until you aim it at something that shrugs off frost. Most of the Deep North does.

VerdictMake the Nord Crossbow, don't level it, then convert it straight away. Frostfire only if you want a single-target crossbow; for everything else, Thunderblood.

The Valheim Nord weapons worth your first mould are the Nord Sword for melee and the Nord Crossbow for ranged burst. If you plan to put an essence on either, don't spend Bloodgold leveling the plain Nord version first, because the conversion resets it to quality 1. That one rule saves more materials than any stat table on this page.

About the game

Valheim

Iron Gate AB · Coffee Stain Publishing

Updated 2026-11-02: Added a ranking by playstyle, an upgrade cost table for quality 1 to 4, the three Nord shields, and what patches 1.0.20 and 1.0.21 changed. The 1.0.21 Nord Greatsword fix moves it up our list.

Iron Gate's 1.0 patch notes list 12 Nord weapons, then 12 Frostfire and 12 Thunderblood versions of the same 12. So you're really choosing a weapon type once, then an element once. Every one of them is made the same way: find the mould, make a cast at the Black Forge, harden the cast in a Frost Foundry.

All 12 Valheim Nord weapons at quality 1

WeaponDamage at quality 1Our call
Nord Sword170 slashFirst pick for melee. Double-damage third hit, 3x thrust
Nord Greatsword210 slashWide combo for groups; better since the 1.0.21 multi-hit fix
Nord Atgeir182 pierceOnly if you already play polearm
Nord Mace170 bluntOne-handed blunt with a shield
Nord Sledge225 blunt, 450 staggerBest for staggering big targets
Nord Axe176 slash, 90 chopA weapon and a tree cutter
Nord Greataxe188 slash, 40 chopSkip unless you already main two-handed axes
Nord Spear170 pierceSpear players only
Nord Dagger75 slash, 75 pierce, 6x backstabSneak builds
Nord Knucklechains114 blunt, 6x backstabFist players only
Nord Bow100 pierce, 10 spiritSustained ranged damage
Nord Crossbow264 pierce, 180 chopRanged burst; pick one target

Damage is quality 1 from each weapon's wiki page. Nord Buckler, Nord Shield and Nord Greatshield are shields, not part of the 12.

Why the sword first? The primary combo is three hits with double damage on the last one, it takes no damage penalty against multiple targets, and the secondary attack deals 3x damage with a slightly longer reach. It does a bit of everything, and in a biome where you'll fight both crowds and single heavies, that flexibility matters more than a higher number on a two-hander. The sledge is our second melee choice purely for the 450 stagger. The Nord Greataxe is the one we'd skip: its 40 chop prompted an r/valheim thread titled "Why on earth does the Nord Greataxe have the same amount of chop damage as the Iron Battleaxe?" Patch 1.0.14 did fix Deep North battleaxes so they "can now cut all the trees," but the number is still 40.

For where these sit against older gear, the Valheim weapons tier list ranks every weapon type by biome.

Best Nord weapon for each playstyle, ranked

Our order assumes you're picking the first mould you'll pour Bloodgold into, not hunting for a theoretical maximum. The column on the right is the reason, not decoration: each number is from the weapon's page on the Valheim wiki and matches the item database at thevalheim.wiki.

RankPlaystylePickThe number that decides it
1All-round melee with a shieldNord Sword170 slash (200 at quality 4), 16 stamina per swing, no penalty when the combo hits several enemies
2Ranged openerNord Crossbow264 pierce, bolts fly straight with no drop, one shot every 6 seconds
3Single heavy targetsNord Sledge225 blunt, 210 knockback, but 28 stamina per swing and 20% slower movement
4CrowdsNord Greatsword210 slash, wide three-hit combo; since patch 1.0.21 it no longer loses damage per enemy when one swing hits several
5Sustained rangedNord Bow100 pierce and 10 spirit at quality 1; spirit rises to 46 at quality 4
6Sneak attacksNord Dagger75 slash plus 75 pierce with a 6x backstab

The Greatsword is the pick that moved. Iron Gate's patch 1.0.21 notes say the "Nord Greatsword and variants no longer deal less damage per enemy when hitting several enemies in one hit", and hitting several enemies is the only reason to carry a wide two-hander.

The six we left out (Mace, Axe, Atgeir, Spear, Knucklechains, Greataxe) aren't bad, they're skill-line weapons. Your weapon skill matters more than the Nord tier: thevalheim.wiki lists the Nord Sword at 43 to 94 slash with Swords at 0 and 145 to 170 at Swords 100, and the Valheim wiki's skills page puts the max-level gain at +141% average damage. If your Clubs skill is far ahead of Swords, the Nord Mace (170 blunt, the same number as the sword) beats switching to a sword you've barely swung.

Nord weapon upgrade costs, quality 1 to 4

Every Nord weapon in our top four upgrades on the same ladder: 10 damage per level for the melee weapons, 8 pierce (and 5 chop) for the crossbow, and the same Bloodgold bill. The Greatsword is the odd one: it uses Frozen Branch where the others use Timberwood.

Sources: each weapon's upgrade table on the Valheim wiki and the "Crafted at" table on thevalheim.wiki, read November 2, 2026. Both list quality 4 at station level 7, and the Black Forge stops at level 6 (five extensions, the last being the Smith's Aprons added in 1.0).

Add it up and a quality 3 Nord Sword costs 50 Bloodgold and 25 Timberwood from mould to final level. That is exactly why we keep repeating the essence rule: convert at quality 1, or those 30 Bloodgold of upgrades vanish. Timberwood has dropped more often since October 28, when patch 1.0.21 made Deep North trees drop "fewer pinecones and more Timberwood".

Where Nord moulds drop

Every mould page we checked lists the same three places: trash piles in the Winding Tunnels, chests buried at memorial sites, and weapon stands on the last floor of Mörkhalla. The Nord Sword mould adds barrels in abandoned villages. None of them is a fixed boss drop, so expect to farm.

How much farming? One r/valheim player posted a pile of moulds with no Nord Sword among them, and the top reply blamed the method rather than the luck: "A single winding tunnel should give you more moulds than this", so break everything in the tunnels, not just the weapon racks.

GODEEPER: The mould farm lives in two dungeons. The Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla guide covers layouts, loot and what's waiting on the last floor.

Step-by-Step: craft the Nord Crossbow, then the Frostfire Crossbow

1. Build the stations: You need a Black Forge at level 4 for the cast, a Frigid Kiln to make Liquid Frost (5 Ice becomes 1 Liquid Frost every 30 seconds) and a Frost Foundry to harden the cast. The Deep North biome guide covers where the Ice and Frostcore come from.

2. Make the cast: At the level 4 Black Forge, combine 20 Bloodgold, 10 Timberwood and one Nord Crossbow mould into Cast: Nord Crossbow.

3. Harden it: Put the cast in the Frost Foundry with 5 Liquid Frost. Hardening takes 50 seconds. You now have a quality 1 Nord Crossbow: 264 pierce, 180 chop, 3x backstab.

4. Farm the essence: Frostfire Essence (and Thunderblood Essence) drop from Fallen Warriors. You summon them by placing three Memorial Coal on the altar at a memorial site.

5. Convert at quality 1: Back at the level 4 Black Forge, combine the Nord Crossbow with 20 Bloodgold and 1 Frostfire Essence. The wiki is blunt about it: an upgraded Nord Crossbow "will not keep its upgrade level" when modified with essences. One r/valheim reply puts it more plainly: "Upgrading to a different variant downgrades it to lvl 1."

Nord Crossbow stats and how it plays

Each bolt takes 3.5 seconds to load and 3 stamina at skill level 0. With the firing, loading and readying animations, the wiki puts the real rate at one shot every 6 seconds. Jumping or sprinting resets the load, and switching weapons drops the loaded bolt. In exchange, bolts fly in a straight line with no drop, and the knockback is 210.

So it's a sniper's tool. Open a fight with a loaded bolt, then switch to your melee weapon. Carrying it costs 5% movement speed, and it weighs 1.5.

Upgrades raise pierce by 8 per level: 264, 272, 280, 288. Quality 2 needs a level 5 Black Forge and quality 3 a level 6 one. Quality 4 needs level 7, which the wiki marks as not yet available because the forge currently maxes out at 6. Past that, the Forge of Potential takes a Bloodgold Battle Idol per attempt with a 65% chance to add a level. Otherwise the item is destroyed and you get part of the materials back. We wouldn't gamble a crossbow you only fire every 6 seconds.

Frostfire Crossbow vs Thunderblood Crossbow

Pierce264232274
Elementnone88 frost, 12 fire45 lightning
Chop180180180
Extranonenone25% chain lightning per hit, +0.2% damage per missing health point

On paper Frostfire wins: 332 total against 319 for Thunderblood. In practice, the things you'll shoot in the Deep North don't cooperate. Gammeltrolls resist pierce and frost and are immune to fire. Barka resist pierce, frost and lightning. Kall Fimbulbringer resists pierce, fire, frost and lightning in its first phase. Against the troll, Frostfire's 88 frost gets halved and the 12 fire does nothing. The Kall Fimbulbringer boss guide has the full damage-type breakdown for the final fight.

Players agree. In a recent r/valheim thread, one player noted that "Jotun are very resistant to frost, negating most of the bonus damage from frostfire." The crossbow is the one place people still pick it: "on items I want single target damage (like a crossbow)... I get frost fire." Chain lightning jumping to the next target is the last thing you want when you're picking off one enemy from range.

Nord shields: which one goes with the sword

The three Nord shields come out of the same Black Forge and Frost Foundry, but they stop at quality 3, and they upgrade at the Forge of Potential with a Bloodgold Protection Idol rather than the Battle Idol the weapons use.

Values from the Valheim wiki and thevalheim.wiki, November 2, 2026. With the Nord Sword we'd take the Buckler if you parry and the plain Nord Shield if you don't; the Greatshield has no parry bonus and costs another 5% movement. The 1.0 patch notes also list four staffs (Echo Spike, Spirit Caller, Northern Vengeance, Lightning Strike) and the Shield of Roots in the same release, but none of them is a Nord item: the wiki files the staffs under Deep North magic, so they're outside this ranking.

What patches 1.0.20 and 1.0.21 changed for Nord gear

PatchDateWhat it means for Nord weapons
1.0.14Sep 17, 2026Deep North battleaxes "can now cut all the trees" (tool tier fix; the Greataxe's chop is still 40)
1.0.20Oct 15, 2026"Fixed a possible exploit to Forge of Potential"; rare-drop luck no longer resets between play sessions
1.0.21Oct 28, 2026Nord Greatsword and variants keep full damage per enemy on multi-hits; Deep North trees give more Timberwood; the moose trophy requirement was removed from the Deep North mage helmet (armor, not a weapon)

The 1.0.20 drop change is the one that touches mould farming. Iron Gate says pseudo-random drop logic "will no longer be reset between player sessions to give a more fair distribution for rare drops"; the notes don't name moulds, so we read it as a general change, not a mould buff. The same text sits in the Valheim wiki's version history. The patches in between (1.0.15 to 1.0.17) changed no Nord weapon; our 1.0.16 and 1.0.17 breakdowns list what they did fix, and the next update tracker has what Iron Gate has said about content after 1.0.

GODEEPER: Before you spend Bloodgold, make sure the food is right. The Valheim food buff guide covers the Deep North dishes that keep you alive while you farm Fallen Warriors.

Our take

We'd make the Nord Sword first and the Nord Crossbow second, and we'd convert both at quality 1 without a single upgrade in between. On the sword, Thunderblood. On the crossbow, it's a real choice: Thunderblood if you shoot into groups, Frostfire if you use it to open fights on one target and the target isn't frost-resistant. Either way, don't take Frostfire into a Gammeltroll fight expecting the big number in the table.

Leveling past quality 3 isn't possible at the Black Forge yet, so don't save Bloodgold for it. Spend it on the second weapon instead, or on the Crown of Valheim: the same level 4 Black Forge turns Kall's Crown Jewel and 5 Bloodgold into it.

For the rest of the endgame, the Deep North achievements guide is a checklist of the 1.0 additions, and the Valheim base building guide helps you protect the forge you'll be standing at for hours. If you're coming back after a long break, the Valheim boss order guide shows where Kall sits in the run, and if you haven't beaten the seventh boss yet, the Fader guide is the fight before any of this. The Valheim complete guide collects everything else we've covered, and the Valheim 1.0 launch recap has what else arrived with the Deep North.

How we checked this

We read each Nord weapon page and the Frostfire, Thunderblood, Frostfire Essence, Liquid Frost, Black Forge and Bloodgold Battle Idol pages on the Valheim wiki on October 13, 2026. On November 2, 2026 we reread the Nord weapon, shield, Black Forge, Skills and Version history pages and cross-checked every number in the ranking, upgrade and shield tables against thevalheim.wiki's item database. We matched the 12-weapon roster against Iron Gate's 1.0 patch notes and read every patch since (1.0.10 through 1.0.21); the weapon changes are the 1.0.14 battleaxe fix and the 1.0.21 Greatsword multi-hit fix. We also read two r/valheim threads on the Frostfire vs Thunderblood choice and watched the official 1.0 trailer.
