Valheim Patch 1.0.17 Notes: The Bug That Erased Bases

Four lines of patch notes, and one of them is the bug that could wipe a base off the map.

VerdictUpdate before your next long session. If part of your world already vanished, restore a backup from before the loss; the notes don't promise anything back.

Valheim patch 1.0.17 is small, and it fixes the worst bug a building game can have. Iron Gate's notes list "a rare bug that could erase all objects in parts of the world when one large world save chunk file was split into smaller ones." The patch landed on October 6, and that line is why it matters more than the other three.

If your base is still standing, update and keep playing. If a piece of it already disappeared, don't count on the patch to bring it back: your way home is a backup from before the loss.

What Valheim patch 1.0.17 fixes

Fix in the official notesWhat it means for you
A rare bug could erase all objects in parts of the world when a large world save chunk file was splitThe headline fix. Builds, chests and placed items in the affected area could vanish
Invalid item types, mainly an invalid Shield of Roots variant that was available in 1.0.15 on PlayStation 5, caused buggy behaviourInvalid styles now reset to the default style and keep working

The patch takes "a few days to get uploaded to all platforms," and crossplay keeps working while the versions catch up. The previous patch, Valheim patch 1.0.16, had the bigger list: Deep North terrain resets, raid spawns and achievement fixes.

Why the 1.0 save system made this bug possible

Valheim 1.0 shipped a new save system that "splits world data across chunks" to save faster and survive a crash in the middle of a write. It first went out on the public test branch in May, when the world file moved into folders and was "split up in multiple files (chunks)." That test build also made a backup before loading an older, unchunked world.

The bug sat right at that seam: one big chunk file being broken into smaller ones. Iron Gate calls it rare and doesn't say which worlds were hit.

Three days before the patch, a player posted on r/valheim that whole areas of their world had been "completely wiped." u/TopNeptuna wrote that the world was "created pre 1.0," that a Black Forest spot with Haldor "was fine for nearly 50 hours after 1.0," and that an AFK Greydwarf farm vanished along with "Chests full of graydwarf eyes, wood, stone, resin, and trophies." A reply from u/gurebu said it "has been reported multiple times over the last two weeks."

Nothing ties that thread to the fix, so we can't prove it's the same bug. It does fit the description: an old world, a whole area wiped at once, and nothing else broken.

If your base already disappeared

Do what that player did. u/TopNeptuna "Restored an auto save from yesterday" and "Only lost about 6ish hours of gameplay." Backups live in Valheim's in-game Manage Saves menu (patch 1.0.16 fixed a Mac App Store bug that stopped them restoring there).

Pick a backup from before the area vanished, not the newest one. And if the backups are all too recent, a rebuild is the fallback; our Valheim base building guide covers comfort, wards and portals for the second time around.

The 1.0 launch trailer spends a few seconds on buildings: from 0:25 it cuts from a thatched hut to a lit longhouse, and at 0:27 it pans across a tall wooden tower and a stone-arched bridge at sunset. That's the kind of build this bug could take out.

The Shield of Roots fix on PlayStation 5

The second fix is narrower. Version 1.0.15 on PlayStation 5 let players get an invalid variant of the Shield of Roots, a shield added in 1.0, and invalid item types "causing buggy behaviour." Now an invalid style resets to the default and the item works normally. If you own the odd variant, expect it to look like the standard shield after the update.

Our take

A patch this short usually isn't worth a headline. This one is, because the bug it fixes could erase hours of building in one go. We'd install it and keep backups from different days, then read what Iron Gate has said about the next Valheim update. The studio promises more content after 1.0 but hasn't given a date.
