Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 released May 22, 2026. It adds more resource spots in both the early and late game regions, fixes the Hammerhead behavior that sent them following players back to their bases, and resolves two Tadpole-related bugs. The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy were also rewritten, so you'll be prompted to re-accept on your next login.

What changed in Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 (full list)

Everything in the developer's post, organized by category:

Resources

  • More Silver resource areas added in the early game region
  • More Troilite resource areas added in the late game region

Creature behavior

  • Hammerhead behavior adjusted: Hammerheads are no longer attracted to Tadpole lights. Previously they would follow players back to their bases and stay near the Tadpole trying to reach it. This was one of the most-cited bugs since launch.

Tadpole fixes

  • Fixed a bug where players could be teleported back to their base while exploring in a Tadpole
  • Fixed an infinite oxygen bug that triggered when a player died from hunger or thirst while piloting a Tadpole

Crashes and performance

  • Resolved a crash that could occur when losing connection from a multiplayer game
  • Fixed a random crash that could occur in the late game region
  • Improved performance when using Epic visual settings

Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

  • Revised sections: Preamble, Limited License, Gameplay Videos, Prohibited Uses, Ownership, Player-Submitted Content, Limitation of Liability, Transfer of Terms and Conditions
  • Privacy Policy sections revised: what information is collected and how it's shared
  • Players will be prompted to re-accept the updated TOS on next login. The callout is currently English-only and will be translated in a future patch.

The Hammerhead fix matters more than it looks

The Hammerhead behavioral change is the most impactful fix in Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2. Before the patch, a Hammerhead that detected a Tadpole would follow the vehicle's lights back to wherever the player went, including straight to the base. Once at the base, it stayed there and tried to reach the Tadpole even after the player exited. That made returning home a consistent hazard that had nothing to do with player positioning or skill.

The fix specifically targets light attraction. Hammerheads are still out there in the water, but they won't follow you home anymore. Players building deeper bases or navigating the late game region were most affected before Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 shipped.

TOS changes after the EULA controversy

The TOS rewrite in Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 is a direct response to community backlash following the initial EA launch. Unknown Worlds and Krafton received heavy criticism over language in the original Terms of Service, particularly around data collection and content rights. A community letter addressing those concerns went out the day after Hotfix 2 shipped.

The affected sections cover content rights (Gameplay Videos, Player-Submitted Content), liability limits, and data practices. If you want the full comparison of before and after language, the Steam announcement includes the official summary.

What's coming in upcoming patches

The developer posted a community letter alongside Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 outlining what's being worked on next. The stated areas:

  • Creature aggression timing and aggro range adjustments
  • Flare effectiveness improvements
  • Survival Tool effectiveness improvements
  • Creature interactions with vehicles and bases

These changes are described as coming "over a series of upcoming patches" rather than in a single drop. The developer was explicit that creature balance is not yet where they want it, and that Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 is the start of a longer fix cycle.

The Subnautica 2 creature guide covers current creature behavior and avoidance strategies, which remain valid until those patches land.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 fix? Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 adds more Silver resource spots in the early game and more Troilite in the late game. It fixes the Hammerhead behavior (they no longer follow Tadpole lights back to player bases), resolves two Tadpole bugs (teleport-back and infinite oxygen), and patches multiplayer and late game crashes. The TOS and Privacy Policy were also rewritten.

Why do Hammerheads no longer follow players in Hotfix 2? The fix targets light attraction specifically. Hammerheads were tracking Tadpole vehicle lights and following them anywhere the player traveled, including back to bases. Hotfix 2 removed this behavior. Hammerheads still exist as creatures in the water but won't pursue Tadpoles home.

Will I need to accept new terms in Subnautica 2? Yes. Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 rewrites key sections of the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. On your next launch you'll see a re-acceptance prompt. The callout is English-only at launch and will be translated in a future patch.

Does Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 fix the TOS controversy? The TOS rewrite addresses several specific sections the community flagged after launch. Whether it fully resolves the underlying concerns depends on how you read the updated language. The developer's community letter published May 23 outlines what changed and why.

What creature balance changes are coming to Subnautica 2? The developer confirmed upcoming patches will adjust creature aggression timing, aggro range, flare effectiveness, Survival Tool effectiveness, and how creatures interact with vehicles and bases. These are planned for multiple patches, not a single update.

Is Subnautica 2 worth buying after Hotfix 2? Subnautica 2 sold 4 million copies in its first weeks of Early Access. Hotfix 2 addresses several of the most-cited issues from launch. Creature balance is still an active concern, but the developer has committed to a series of improvements. The Subnautica 2 complete guide hub covers what's in the current build.
