Subnautica 2 Angel Comb Locations: All 4 Adaptations Found

Subnautica 2 Angel Comb locations aren't optional flavor content to go hunting for when you're bored. Four exist in the current Early Access build, and each one gates a specific Adaptation, which is not the same thing as the Biomods you get from scanning creatures. Skip the Heat Tolerance comb and the Graveyard biome will cook you before you get a good look at it. This guide covers where each comb sits, what it takes to open it, and the exact patch that fixed a bug that was locking players out of progression entirely.
TL;DR: Four Angel Combs, four Adaptations. Pressure Tolerance sits in Sleep Bay 3 (580m, no Bloom Nodes needed, first one you'll find). Digestion is in the Shallows near Camp One (10m, no nodes needed). Heat Tolerance is in a cave on the Shallows outskirts (60m, 2 Bloom Nodes). Axum Vision is beneath the Karakorum Power Plant (430m, 3 Bloom Nodes). If a comb won't open after you've cleared its nodes, update to Hotfix 4: Unknown Worlds shipped a fix for exactly that bug on July 14, 2026.
Subnautica 2 Angel Comb Locations: Quick Answer
There are four Angel Combs in the current build. Pressure Tolerance is the one you'll trip over first, inside Sleep Bay 3 near your starting Lifepod. Digestion follows shortly after in the Shallows near Camp One. Heat Tolerance and Axum Vision both require clearing multiple Bloom Nodes first, and both sit deeper: a Shallows-outskirts cave for Heat Tolerance, and beneath the Karakorum Power Plant for Axum Vision. The table below has exact depths and node counts for all four.
| Adaptation | Location | Depth | Bloom Nodes Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure Tolerance | Sleep Bay 3, deep hole southwest of the Lifepod | ~580m | None |
| Digestion | Shallows, near Camp One, above Anita's Blackbox | ~10m | None |
| Heat Tolerance | Cave on the outskirts of the Shallows | ~60m | 2 |
| Axum Vision | Beneath the Karakorum Power Plant | ~430m | 3 |
Key Takeaways
- Four Angel Combs are confirmed in the current Early Access build, each unlocking a different required Adaptation
- Adaptations (Pressure Tolerance, Digestion, Heat Tolerance, Axum Vision) are mandatory for progression, unlike the optional Biomods you get from scanning creatures
- Two Angel Combs (Pressure Tolerance, Digestion) need no Bloom Nodes cleared and can be reached in your first couple of hours
- The other two (Heat Tolerance, Axum Vision) require destroying Bloom Cankers on 2 and 3 connected Bloom Nodes respectively before the main comb opens
- Unknown Worlds' Hotfix 4 (July 14, 2026) fixed a bug where Angel Combs wouldn't open even after every node was cleared
- Two adaptation slots remain unrevealed in the current codex, so more Angel Combs are likely coming
Angel Comb Overview: What This Anchored Lifeform Actually Is
An Angel Comb isn't a creature you fight or a resource node you mine. It's an anchored lifeform, species Cecidia gamikos, and the game's own databank entry admits nobody fully understands it yet: "This animal has no Earthly analog and no clear ecological niche. The ancestral form may be a ctenophore." What is understood: it draws food from a Titan Rockbore buried beneath it, and it may be an obligate parasite of that Rockbore, meaning it can't survive without one nearby.
The part that matters for progression is the central bulb. The databank flatly instructs you to "touch central bulb for genetic adaptation," and that's the whole point of hunting these things down. Interacting with an uninfected bulb, or one you've successfully cured, grants an Adaptation: a permanent upgrade the game treats as mandatory rather than optional. Compare that to the DNA modification and Biomod system, which is scan-based and skippable if you're patient. Miss an Angel Comb and you're not missing a nice-to-have. You're missing a wall you'll hit later with no obvious explanation for why you can't proceed.

How Angel Combs Work: Bloom Cankers, Nodes, and the Core
Here's the thing nobody explains well in-game: most Angel Combs aren't just sitting there waiting for you. They're infected. A strain of Proteavirus called the Bloom parasitizes Angel Combs and turns the one you want into a Bloom Core, a producer of more virus rather than a source of Adaptations. You can't touch an infected core. You have to cure it first.
Curing works in two stages. Small growths called Bloom Cankers, gray tendrils with a glowing core wrapped in green petal-like guards, latch onto both the main comb and any Juvenile Angel Combs connected to it through the same Titan Rockbore. Those juveniles are Bloom Nodes once infected, and the wiki is specific about the order: "The Bloom Core cannot be cured until the smaller, connected Bloom Nodes are cured first." Skip a node, and the main comb stays locked no matter how many times you blast its own cankers.
Two Adaptations here, Pressure Tolerance and Digestion, skip this entirely. Their Angel Combs are clean from the start. The other two make you work for it.

Step-by-Step: How to Open Any Angel Comb
- Locate the comb. Use the coordinates and landmarks below. Most sit near a named wreck or point of interest, not out in open water.
- Check for infection. If the central bulb looks diseased rather than open, it's a Bloom Core and you'll need to clear its nodes first.
- Find the connected Bloom Nodes. They're juvenile Angel Combs tied to the same Titan Rockbore, usually within a few hundred meters.
- Destroy standard Bloom Cankers with a Sonic Resonator. Aim for the glowing core inside the gray tendrils.
- Destroy armored Bloom Cankers with a Feedback Resonator. A standard Sonic Resonator won't dent these; they're built specifically to resist it.
- Repeat for every connected node. The main core won't accept interaction until all of them are cured.
- Return to the main comb and interact with the Gene Donor at its center. This is where the Adaptation actually transfers.
- If it still won't open, update the game. Hotfix 4 fixed a specific bug matching this symptom.
Pressure Tolerance: The First Angel Comb in Sleep Bay 3
This is the one you'll find without trying. Sleep Bay 3 is where the Qualified Investigator wakes up at the start of the game, a room in the deep hole southwest of your Lifepod, roughly 580m down. The Angel Comb here is uninfected from the jump, no Bloom Nodes, no resonator work, just find it and interact.
What Pressure Tolerance does is enable your body to produce TMAO, which stiffens water molecules against pressure and cuts gas saturation in your tissues. Without it, going anywhere near that starting depth would be a death sentence, which tells you something about how deliberately this one is placed in your path. You're not going to accidentally skip it.
Digestion: The Angel Comb in the Shallows Near Camp One
The second Angel Comb sits in the Shallows, about 160m out from your Lifepod at a 22.5-degree bearing, directly above Anita's Blackbox. Depth is shallow, around 10m, and like Pressure Tolerance it needs no Bloom Nodes cleared. This is the second adaptation most players unlock, and it's the reason your first attempt to eat alien fauna doesn't go horribly.
Before Digestion, eating anything caught in the ocean costs you health instead of restoring it. After, you get the full nutritional benefit with no penalty. If you've been living off crafted food and wondering why raw fish keeps hurting you, this is the Angel Comb you haven't found yet.
Heat Tolerance: The Angel Comb on the Shallows Outskirts
This one's a step up in effort. The comb sits in a cave on the outskirts of the Shallows, about 60m down, but you can't just swim up to it. Two Bloom Nodes need curing first: one beneath Spider Dome to the west (around 80m deep), one closer to Necrolei Hills (around 25m). Bring a Sonic Resonator for the standard cankers on both.
Heat Tolerance is what lets you survive the Graveyard biome's temperature range at all. The adaptation works through nanomachines producing heat shock proteins and a protective bacterial layer on your skin, which sounds unpleasant and is, according to the databank, exactly that. Once you have it, the game notes it grants full access to the Graveyard biome rather than a partial buffer, which matches what players report: without it, that biome just isn't survivable long enough to matter.

Axum Vision: The Angel Comb Beneath Karakorum Power Plant
The most involved of the four. This comb sits beneath the Karakorum Power Plant, a point of interest in the Karakorum Ruins region near the Overgrown Ruins and Root Canyon, at roughly 430m depth. Three Bloom Nodes guard it this time: one to the west (about 600m away, 190m deep), one to the south (about 360m away, 300m deep), and one to the east (about 460m away, 300m deep). All three need clearing before the main core accepts interaction.
Axum Vision itself is the strangest of the four functionally. It lets you see previously hidden glyphs written in Axum Radial A, and it makes polarized screens in the Power Plant's generator control rooms actually legible. If you've reached that facility and found blank screens where the game is clearly implying something should display, that's this adaptation, not a bug. Given the depth and the node count, budget real time for this one, and don't attempt it without depth-rated hull sections; the Karakorum Ruins region isn't forgiving to a Tadpole that isn't upgraded yet.

Tips for Finding and Opening Angel Combs
Carry both resonators once you have them. You won't know whether a canker is armored until you're standing in front of it, and swimming back to base for the right tool wastes a trip you didn't need to make twice.
Don't confuse a Bloom Node with the main comb. Nodes are smaller and won't grant an Adaptation on their own; they're a prerequisite, not a destination. If you interact with one expecting an upgrade and get nothing, that's working as intended.
Do the shallow ones first. Pressure Tolerance and Digestion cost you almost nothing in time and gear, and Digestion specifically changes how viable eating wild fauna is for the rest of your run. There's no reason to be gambling your health bar on raw fish for hours longer than necessary.
Check your patch version before you assume you've done something wrong. The July 14, 2026 hotfix specifically targeted combs that stayed sealed after every node was legitimately cleared. If you're on an older build and everything else checks out, that's very possibly the explanation, not a mistake in your node-clearing.
Treat Axum Vision as a two-trip job unless your hull sections and resonators are already sorted. Scouting all three node locations in one pass and then returning fully equipped beats discovering you're under-geared 400m down with an armored canker in front of you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Angel Comb in Subnautica 2? An anchored lifeform (species Cecidia gamikos) that feeds off the Titan Rockbore beneath it. Its central bulb grants a required progression upgrade called an Adaptation once you clear the Proteavirus infection choking it.
How many Angel Combs are in Subnautica 2? Four confirmed as of the current Early Access build, each tied to a different Adaptation: Pressure Tolerance, Digestion, Heat Tolerance, and Axum Vision. Two more adaptation slots exist in the codex but aren't unlocked yet.
Where is the first Angel Comb in Subnautica 2? In Sleep Bay 3, the room where the Qualified Investigator wakes up, roughly 580m down in the hole southwest of the Lifepod. It grants Pressure Tolerance and needs no Bloom Nodes cleared first.
How do you open an Angel Comb in Subnautica 2? Destroy every Bloom Canker on its connected Bloom Nodes with a Sonic Resonator (Feedback Resonator for armored ones), which cures the nodes. Only then does the main comb's core accept the resonator and open.
Are Adaptations different from Biomods in Subnautica 2? Yes. Biomods, unlocked by scanning creatures, are optional character upgrades. Adaptations, unlocked at Angel Combs, are required for progression: without Heat Tolerance, for instance, the Graveyard biome is unsurvivable.
My Angel Comb won't open even after clearing every Bloom Node. What's wrong? This was a known bug. Unknown Worlds' July 14, 2026 Hotfix 4 patch notes specifically list "Fixed Angel Combs not opening for some players, blocking progression." Update the game before troubleshooting further.
Where is the Digestion Adaptation Angel Comb? In the Shallows near Camp One, about 160m out from the Lifepod at a 22.5-degree bearing, directly above Anita's Blackbox. It's shallow (around 10m) and needs no Bloom Nodes cleared.
