Warhammer Survivors Characters List: 17 Revealed Champions

Forty-plus champions at launch, 17 named so far. Here's who they are, what they start with, and the six you can play free right now.

VerdictStart with Trooper Kozlowski in the free demo: his Lasgun feeds the Squad system that the rest of the roster is built around.

8 min readBy Priya NairLast reviewed

This Warhammer Survivors characters list covers every champion revealed so far. There are over 40 playable characters in the game, and as of October 29, 2026, Auroch Digital and its partners have named 17 of them: ten from Warhammer 40,000 and seven from Warhammer Age of Sigmar. Six of those are playable today in the free Steam demo. The rule that shapes the whole list is that the two universes never mix: a 40K champion only fights in 40K stages, an Age of Sigmar champion only in the Mortal Realms. If you only try one, make it Trooper Kozlowski, because his Lasgun shows off the Squad system that a lot of this roster is built around.

How many characters are in Warhammer Survivors?

The Steam store page promises "Over 40 iconic playable characters from the Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar universes", and adds that "Each character comes with unique weapons and starting stats". Auroch has revealed them a few at a time since the November 2025 announcement, through Steam posts, the Triple-i and Skulls showcases, and its Feature Focus videos. A Hobby Table post in June said plainly: "We haven't revealed all our playable characters yet". So expect the launch roster to be well over double this list.

Two more things to know before the table. Each universe has "their own character rosters, weapons, enemies, and stages", per Auroch's FAQ after the reveal trailer (November 11, 2025), though some weapons are shared. And Warhammer paint pots found on the battlefield "unlock new character forms and secrets", per the store page.

Warhammer 40,000 characters (10 revealed)

Every 40K champion Auroch has shown so far fights for the Imperium. Here's each one, with the call we'd make on paper. None of these calls come from playing the full game; they come from what Auroch says each character does.

Malum Caedo. The Ultramarine from Auroch's Boltgun games is the face of the roster, but he's "parked his signature Boltgun" and starts with a Chainsword that "unleashes horizontal serrated attacks". Pick him if you came from Boltgun. Skip him if you want to see what's new, since he's the returning face from those games.

Trooper Kozlowski. A Cadian Shock Trooper who "begins each run with a Lasgun". As the Lasgun levels up, "squadmates join his side". Pick him first: he's in the demo, and he shows how the Squad system works better than anyone else on the list.

Brother Luca. An Ultramarines Intercessor and "an entirely new character created for Warhammer Survivors". He starts with the Boltgun Malum left behind, and it evolves into the Heavy Bolter. Pick him if you want a straight gun build; he's the plainest ranged option revealed.

Marneus Calgar. The Chapter Master of the Ultramarines led the new champions in the April Triple-i reveal. His Gauntlets of Ultramar are a champion-locked weapon, and the Power Fists evolution summons him to your side, "Unless you are playing as Marneus Calgar". Pick him when you've unlocked him; skip the Power Fists while you're playing as him, since the summon won't fire.

Knight-Commander Pask. He "commands his Leman Russ Tank", and Auroch's August art blog called him one of the picks "a bit out of left field". Auroch hasn't said what he starts with. Pick him for the novelty; we'll know more at launch.

Legend of Catachan. New in the October 6 demo. This "One Man Army" moves faster than the other Survivors and enters each zone "armed exclusively with Frag Grenades", later unlocking a modified Ripper Pistol. Pick him if you like to kite; skip him if you want a strong opening, since grenades alone is a thin start.

Commissar Sebastian Yarrick. Named on the Steam page ("Play as the legendary Commissar, Sebastian Yarrick") but not yet detailed. One to watch rather than plan around.

The Castellan. The Black Templars' Castellan has "attack power and skill" that "increase with every follower gained". Auroch's Squad System video pairs him with Kozlowski at 1:00, because each Shock Trooper Kozlowski's Lasgun brings in adds to the Castellan's damage. Pick him once you understand followers, since by Auroch's description his damage grows with each one.

Morvenn Vahl. Revealed on the PlayStation Blog on October 6, after appearing in the key art. Auroch designer Ellie Harrodine calls the High Abbess Sanctorum one of the "larger Warhammer Survivors characters": she strides in her Paragon Warsuit, "armed with the devastating Heavy Bolter Fidelis". Evolved into the Purgator Mirabilis, it "unlocks the use of the warsuit's Paragon Missile Launcher". She isn't in the demo, so she's the one to look out for at launch if you like big, heavy champions.

Chaplain Fo'Baran. Warhammer Community's April 9 first look named "Salamanders Chaplain Fo'Baran" among the famous 40K characters joining Malum Caedo. Nothing on his weapons yet.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar characters (7 revealed)

The Age of Sigmar side is all forces of Order so far: Stormcast Eternals, Fyreslayers and the Blacktalons.

Neave Blacktalon. The demo's Age of Sigmar lead, starting "each run with the iconic Whirlwind Axes". Pick her as the safe first choice on this side.

Sharynn Azurwrath. A Stormcast Eternal Vanquisher whose Grandblade, levelled up, "unleashes a huge circular swing". Pick her for crowd clearing.

Gotrek Gurnisson. The Realmslayer carries Zangrom-Thaz, which other champions get by evolving the Fyrestorm Greataxe. That evolution calls Gotrek in as a summon, but "If you're playing as Gotrek, he won't spawn a clone of himself". Pick him if you want the big-name melee champion.

Ulgromthier. An Auric Runemaster of the Fyreslayers who "starts each battle with a higher health pool" and fires arcing magma from a Brazier Staff. Pick him if you keep dying early in the demo.

Lyssa Revenya. New in the October 6 demo. Her Rope and Grapnel "restrains enemies, often instantly killing weaker foes". Pick her if you'd rather control a crowd than out-tank it.

Bastian Carthalos. The Stormcast Lord-Commander swings Uskavar the Sunderer "in specific close-range patterns". Pick him with Lorai, below.

Lorai, Child of the Abyss. One of Neave's Blacktalons in the wider Warhammer setting. Her Nebulous Sea Fog draws foes in, and the Squad System video (0:38) pairs her with Bastian so she pulls enemies into his close-range damage. Pick the pair together; neither looks as strong alone.

Which characters are in the demo?

The current Steam demo, live since October 6, has six champions. Malum Caedo and Neave Blacktalon "return to defend their respective universes", joined by Trooper Kozlowski and the Legend of Catachan on the 40K side, and Ulgromthier and Lyssa Revenya in the Mortal Realms. Auroch calls it "a short, curated experience compared to the full game", and progress won't carry to the full release. Whether it stays up after Next Fest is covered in our Next Fest demo explainer, and the rest of the event is in our October Next Fest roundup.

Summons, followers and cameos that aren't on the list

Some names show up on screen without being playable characters, or without being confirmed as one:

  • Followers. Every character and weapon has keywords. Pick up a weapon your champion's keywords don't allow and "they will be joined by an ally that can". Followers can't take damage or collect items.
  • Evolution summons. Gotrek and Marneus Calgar both appear as weapon summons for other champions, and are also playable themselves.
  • Demetrian Titus. Space Marine 2's hero made "a brief appearance" in the Skulls trailer, per Auroch. That's a cameo, not a confirmed champion, so he isn't counted above.

Can you play as Orks, Chaos or Tyranids?

Not among anything revealed. Auroch's June post says new characters joined "our rosters of Imperium and Order champions to stand against the foul forces of Chaos", and the enemy side is Tyranids, Skaven, Orks, Death Guard, Blades of Khorne and the Gloomspite Gitz. Players have asked. "Is their any plans to play as other races as well. Not just imeprium but also orks, necrons, etc?", one r/WarhammerSurvivors post asked on October 20, with no developer answer in the thread when we checked.

The Hobby Table stage mixes enemy factions, but within one universe. Auroch built a Hobby Table for each universe, and it throws "numerous different enemy factions" at you. Asked whether a character can fight "several enemy factions from the same universe at the same time", Auroch answered "Yes!", and you still pick "any character you wish from their respective Warhammer universe".

Our take

Seventeen of forty-plus is a decent sample, and the pattern is clear: Auroch is building around pairs, not solo heroes. The Castellan wants Kozlowski's troopers, Bastian wants Lorai's fog, and two champions double as summons for everyone else. That's a smarter hook than a long list of reskins. Our worry is the gap between 17 and 40: we don't know how many of the rest are new mechanics and how many are paint pot forms. If you want more run-based games while you wait for November 10, our best roguelike games of 2026 list is a good start, and poncle's own Vampire Crawlers took the formula somewhere very different. For cheap picks in the same price bracket, see indie games under $20 and our indie roguelite picks.

How we checked this

We haven't played the full game, and we didn't count characters in the demo ourselves. To build this Warhammer Survivors characters list, on October 26, 2026 we read all 28 of Auroch Digital's Steam announcements for the game, from the November 4, 2025 reveal to the October 23, 2026 Next Fest challenge, and listed every champion they name as playable. On October 29 we added two champions those posts never name: Morvenn Vahl, from Auroch's PlayStation Blog post of October 6, and Chaplain Fo'Baran, from Warhammer Community's April 9 first look. When we checked again on October 29, the only newer Steam announcement was the October 27 (14:34 UTC) notice for a Reddit AMA, which names no characters. We cross-checked the roster claims and paint pot unlocks against the Steam store page. We watched Auroch's 1 minute 46 second Feature Focus: Squad System video and noted the title cards for each pairing: "Feature Focus: Squads System" at 0:12, "Lorai and Bastian" at 0:38 and "The Castellan and Kozlowski" at 1:00. The "Just Revealed!" roster image from the Skulls showcase post shows 17 sprites with no captions, some of which Auroch has since named, so we only list champions a source names. We'll update this list at launch.
