Graveyard Keeper 2 Fishing: How to Fish, Bait and Rods

Fishing in Graveyard Keeper 2 is a timing game with one rule the tutorial never spells out: stop reeling the moment the fish fights back.

VerdictGet the Basic Rod from the twins early, farm the no-bait Roach and Gudgeon for Herm, and reel only while the fish rests. Skip the Fish Stand unless you have a plot to spare.

Graveyard Keeper 2 fishing comes down to one habit: hold the reel while the fish rests and let go the second it fights. Do that and even the Basic Rod lands a Roach in about four seconds. Keep reeling through the fight and the line snaps in about a second, which is why the minigame can feel broken.

About the game

Graveyard Keeper 2

Lazy Bear Games · tinyBuild

This guide covers the first rod, the bite, all three baits, what lives in each of the five waters you can reach, and what to do with the catch. It's part of our Graveyard Keeper 2 complete guide. The numbers come from the graveyardkeeper2.io wiki, which reads them out of the game files, plus Lazy Bear Games' own Steam changelogs through Update 1.011 (October 30, 2026), which lists no fishing changes. We haven't played the game ourselves.

What you need before your first cast

RequirementDetail
A rod on your hotbarA rod in the backpack doesn't count
Farming mastery 1Any rod adds at least +1, so the rod covers it
Fish left at the spotEach spot holds only 1 to 5 of each fish
A bait the fish takesOr a fish that bites with No Bait

If the rod is in your backpack, the keeper tells you "I can't fish without a fishing rod". Move it to the toolbar. The rod's Farming point also helps your garden beds and cooking, so it can stay there for good.

Step 1: Get the Basic Rod from the twins

Your first rod is a quest reward. In Two Peas in a Pod, the twins in the village (Jeffry and Heffry) ask for six Clay Plates. Hand them over and you get the Basic Rod, plus Village reputation +5 and a Town Gratitude.

You can craft a rod instead, but it costs more research than it looks. Fishing I (15 green points) unlocks the Basic Rod recipe of 3 Sticks, 2 Bronze Details and 2 Flax Thread. Flax Thread is its own technology at 45 green, and it has to come first. We'd take the quest. Rods never wear out, so you only ever need one of each.

Then visit Herm. His quest The Quiet Art asks for one Roach and one Gudgeon and points you at two spots: one to the left of the house at the Inquisition Base, and one along the road to the Village. The reward is 2 Town Gratitude, a Story and the River fish dishes technology, which is what lets you cut fish into fillets.

Step 2: Cast, wait, then press on the "!"

Stand at the water and interact. A window asks you to pick a bait from your backpack, or No Bait. One bait is spent the moment you cast, whether you land the fish or not.

Then do nothing. A fish bites after 1 to 8 seconds, and pressing anything before that scares it off. When it bites, the float dips and a sign pops up. In tinyBuild's launch trailer it's a yellow exclamation mark over the float at 0:20 and 0:21, with the keeper's rod already bent. You get 0.7 to 2 seconds to press, depending on the fish.

The same dock a second later, splash rings around the float as the fish is hooked Screenshot: official Graveyard Keeper 2 Launch Trailer (Steam store page), 0:22

Step 3: Reel only while the fish rests

This is the part that breaks people. A hooked fish takes short rests, then fights, over and over. Two bars matter: how close the fish is and how tight the line is.

While the fish rests, hold the button: it comes in and the line tightens slowly. While it fights, let go. Reeling then tightens the line very fast, and it breaks within about a second.

There's a second trap. If your Farming mastery is below the fish's Fight value, reeling during a fight actually pulls the fish away from you. That's the loop one player described: "is this fishing just an infinite loop of reel in fish pulls back undoing the work rinse and repeat until it goes out so far it break the line," wrote u/Sad-Repeat-8911. It isn't a bug. Letting go loosens the line quickly, and the fish only swims off a little, so that's the move during a fight.

The swamp Frog is the first place this bites. It takes No Bait, but its Fight is 10, so unless your Farming mastery is at least 10, reeling while it struggles pulls it away. The Fisherman talent, one point on the Farming branch of the Keeper tree, cuts every fish's Fight by 1 to 6 and the Frog's to 6. If you plan to fish at all, we'd take it early.

Step 4: Unlock the three baits

Until your first bait, only four species bite: Roach, Gudgeon and Crucian at the home and village spots, and the Frog in the swamp. Each bait has its own technology and is made at the Kitchen Table in batches of 4.

BaitTechnologyRecipe (makes 4)FarmingOpens up
Breadcrumb BaitFishing II, 40 green1 Bread2Pike, Carp, Bream, Herring, Catfish, Silverfin, Anchovy, Mackerel
Insect BaitFishing III, 120 green4 Fireflies4Salmon, Trout, Goldfish, Tuna, Eel, Swamp Ghost
Live BaitFishing IV (hidden)1 Lacquer + 1 Flesh6The four legendary fish only

Don't trust the in-game bait descriptions. The wiki flags both as wrong: Breadcrumb Bait lists Crucian and Gudgeon, which only bite with no bait, and Insect Bait lists six fish that don't take it at all.

Live Bait is the expensive one. Lacquer is an alchemy result (the simplest mix at the Laboratory I is 2 Blood, per the wiki; our alchemy guide explains the runes). Flesh is found in corpses' pockets at the Autopsy Table, but it carries a white skull, so the wiki says a body usually keeps it for burial (our corpses and organs guide explains the trade-off). The town Baker also sells Flesh.

Fishing IV won't show up on the tech tree until a quest hands it to you. "If it's a ? On the tech tree the answer is always a missing quest progress," u/DevilsTreasure pointed out in a thread about the last bait. The quest is Plenty of Fish in the Sea: bring the twins 3 Flax Thread. It opens after Jack in a Boat and First... Sludge?, your first zombie battle (our battles list covers it). Its reward is Fishing IV, with the Live Bait and Pro Rod recipes.

Where to fish: every spot and what bites

The wiki counts 22 fish in the game's fishing table. A sixth water, the Sewers, is listed there but never placed in the world, so you have five spots to work with.

Each spot holds a small, fixed stock, usually 1 or 2 of each fish (the swamp holds 5 Frogs). Every catch makes that fish rarer at that spot until it comes back, one at a time. When a spot is empty the keeper says "There are no fish left here". The wiki's reading of the files says restocking slows down the more you take and that loading a save restarts the timer, but it marks that part as unchecked in play. Our call: rotate between spots instead of waiting at one.

The Crucian is the no-bait fish worth chasing. There's only 1 per spot, it bites twice as often at night as by day and more readily at the village than at home, and it cuts into 2 fillets instead of 1.

The four legendary fish take Live Bait and nothing else: Mythic Carp at the village, Celestial Salmon in the forest, Elder Catfish in the swamp, Kraken Jr at the port. There's one of each in the water, and their Fight runs 17 to 20. Even the Pro Rod only adds 6 Farming, so for these the rest-only reeling rule isn't optional. A lost fight costs you a bait.

Which rod to upgrade to

Each rod adds Farming mastery, and that bonus counts twice when reeling: once in your mastery and again as the rod's own strength. A better rod pulls fish in faster and keeps the line slacker.

RodFarmingHow to get itCrafting cost
Basic Rod+1Twins, Two Peas in a Pod; or Fishing I3 Sticks, 2 Bronze Details, 2 Flax Thread

Pro Rod+6Fishing IV; Fish Stand tier III; Fish for the Fisher reward2 Special Wood, 2 Engineering Details, 16 Flax Thread; Building 12, Fine Tool Rack

Our pick: craft the Amateur Rod when Breadcrumb Bait arrives (same technology), skip straight past it if Fishing III is close, and let the Fisherman's quest line hand you the Pro Rod for free.

What to do with your catch

Fish go to the Kitchen Table and come out as fillets. Bigger fish give more:

FilletFish (fillets each)Farming to cut
River fish filletRoach, Gudgeon 1; Crucian, Herring 2; Bream, Carp 3; Catfish, Pike 43
Sea fish filletAnchovy, Mackerel 1; Tuna, Salmon 2; Eel, Trout 35
Mysterious fish filletGoldfish 1; Silverfin 2; Swamp Ghost 36

So the "mysterious fish" people search for are the Goldfish, Silverfin and Swamp Ghost. Their fillets have one use: the Fisherman's pie, made from 2 fillets and 2 Frogs.

Where fillets and catches pay off:

WhereWhat it pays
Herm0.4 happiness for each of the first 5 River fish fillets you sell him every week, 2 in all
Fish for the FisherA three-step quest chain with the town Fisherman: 5 River fish fillets teach Sea fish dishes, 5 Sea fish fillets teach Mysterious fish dishes, 5 Mysterious fish fillets pay 3 Town Gratitude and a Pro Rod
The Fisher inspirationCounts every fish you land, any species: 6 levels, 100 catches to finish, 29 Faith for all levels; the first level is free at 3 catches
Fish MagnetThe Steam achievement for catching 50 fish

If your sermons are stuck, Herm's weekly 2 is worth having (our Faith and Science guide explains why happiness caps attendance). Our achievements guide has the other counters to run alongside Fish Magnet.

One early player put the case plainly: "don't sleep on fish, especially in the early game. You get the fishing rod really early and it's pretty easy to fish," u/varlassan advised.

Should you build the Fish Stand?

Probably not. The town has 8 house-plot shops for 7 house plots, and nothing in the game removes a shop, so one shop never gets built. The Fish Stand is the obvious one to leave out. It sells rods you can craft or earn and the Fisherman's bag. It buys fish and bait, and its tier I costs 6 Building Kit I, 4 Wooden Kit I and 2 Iron Kit I.

Players in a Reddit thread about the stand weren't impressed. "Only thing I found useful is to sell a bunch of low-quality bait for town gratitude points each week. Other than that this vendor is pretty much useless," u/Velcraft wrote. Another player just said: "Yeah I regret picking the fishing vendor."

The one real argument for it is the Fisherman's bag: 9 slots for fish and bait, sold for 5 silver. Fish fit in no other bag, not even the Universal one. If your backpack keeps filling with fish, that matters. Since Update 1.009 on October 6, Lazy Bear Games' changelog says bait stored in bags is found when you fish (our patch notes tracker lists each update). For the town side of the game, see our town approval guide.

Fixes: when fishing won't work

  • "I can't fish without a fishing rod": the rod is in your backpack. Put it on the toolbar.
  • The keeper gives up with "maybe next time": one player hit this on every cast. Going by the wiki's rules, the likely causes are pressing before the bite or missing the 0.7 to 2 second window after the sign.
  • "I don't have the correct bait to fish here": most likely the fish that take your baits are used up at that spot for now. The bait window greys out a fish that doesn't take that bait or has none left. u/Dayner_Kurdi got it at the port after 2 or 3 catches. Move to another spot or bring a different bait.
  • "There are no fish left here": the spot is empty. Come back later.
  • Fishing IV shows as a "?": you haven't done Plenty of Fish in the Sea. The twins give it after Jack in a Boat and your first zombie battle.
  • Zombie fishing: the wiki's zombie and fishing pages list no fishing job for zombies. The "your zombies can fish now" posts are about a fan mod by u/Travalgard from October 16. Update 1.011 (October 30) warns it "could impact any existing mods", so check the mod first. Since 1.011 zombie assistants can run Kitchen Oven autocrafts, and our automation guide covers zombies at workbenches.

Our take

Fishing is a side system, and Graveyard Keeper 2 treats it like one. Its real value is early: free Roach and Gudgeon for Herm's quest and recipes, a cheap Fisher inspiration, and a small weekly happiness top-up. The legendary fish are for completionists with a Pro Rod and patience. Learn the rest-then-reel rhythm once, take the Fisherman talent, and give that scarce house plot to a shop you'll actually use.

How we checked this

We haven't played Graveyard Keeper 2. On October 23, 2026 we read the graveyardkeeper2.io wiki's Fishing, Zombies, Town and Traders pages, the pages for all four rods, all three baits, the three fillets and the Fisherman's bag, the Fisher inspiration, the Fisherman talent and the quests Two Peas in a Pod, The Quiet Art, Plenty of Fish in the Sea and Fish for the Fisher. Those pages document values from the game files. Patch information comes from Lazy Bear Games' changelogs on Steam through Update 1.011. Player quotes come from seven r/GraveyardKeeper threads.

We stepped through the Launch Trailer on the Steam store page one second at a time from 0:19 to 0:23. The keeper sits on a dock at 0:20, the yellow bite sign shows over the float at 0:20 and 0:21, and the float splashes at 0:22.
