About the game

ARC Raiders

Embark Studios

The ARC Raiders Matriarch is a colossal ARC boss that only shows up when its map condition is active, and the ARC it summons are the real fight. Get to high ground behind solid cover, clear its escorts, break the faceplates to expose the red core, and hold fire while the shield is up. Do that and it goes down; stand in the open and the missiles and adds will take you apart.

Updated 2026-10-14: rewritten against the ARC Raiders Wiki's Matriarch, Matriarch (map condition), Hullcracker, Equalizer and Matriarch Reactor pages. The old guide described a three-phase fight with mortars and flashbang mines, called the weak point a "Head Core" or "Reactor" in the head, put the Matriarch at the Dam's Floodgates, said it was worth "roughly 1,000 points", and told you to pre-spool the Equalizer. None of that is in any source we could find. The wiki lists a missile swarm, gas and flashbang capsules, an energy shield and summoned ARC, with no phases.

Where it spawns

You can't hunt the Matriarch on a normal raid. It only appears during the Matriarch map condition, and the wiki lists that condition on Dam Battlegrounds, Spaceport and the Blue Gate. The wiki's suggested high ground on each map is Control Tower A6 and the Launch Towers on Spaceport, the Electrical Substation on the Dam, and the top of Reinforced Reception on the Blue Gate, with deployable barricades. The common thread is solid cover you can hold.

What it throws at you

The Missile Swarm is the attack that really hurts. The Matriarch fires 3 to 6 missiles from its back. They go straight up, then fly toward any Raider they've seen, or to where a Raider was last seen. That's why the wiki's main advice is to engage it behind large, solid pieces of cover.

Get close to the legs and you'll eat a Leg Stomp, which knocks you down for about 2 seconds. Its legs move constantly, so standing underneath it is a bad plan even when it's not targeting you.

The Gas Capsule blocks line of sight with green gas and drains your stamina, and the Flashbang Capsule whites out your screen if you can see it go off. Both travel far and roll after landing, which is why the wiki says the Matriarch makes it hard to stay behind the same piece of cover.

If earlier fights felt lighter, that may be why: Embark's 2.0 notes say the Matriarch "can once again use all of its ranged attacks", so expect the full set now.

The shield: hold fire, or get inside

When the Matriarch raises its energy shield, it absorbs every projectile and throwable from outside, Wolfpack missiles included. Only shots from inside the shield do damage. It lasts about a minute, though the wiki notes the duration can vary.

That gives you two options. The safe one is to stop shooting and use the minute to deal with the adds. The aggressive one, if you're confident, is to slip inside the shield and hit the exposed core from there. In a squad, we'd send one player in and keep the rest on the escorts.

Its children are the real fight

The Matriarch calls in larger ARC as its main defense, Bastions, Bombardiers, Leapers and Rocketeers, plus smaller ones: Fireballs, Hornets, Wasps and Ticks. The wiki's verdict is blunt: "If its children are unable to protect it, the fight becomes trivial."

So clear the escorts first. A Bombardier or Rocketeer shelling your position while you try to crack faceplates is how runs end. Our enemy types guide covers each of the summoned machines.

Weak points and weapons

Don't aim for the legs. Shoot the faceplates until they break off, and the "big, red, glowing core" underneath is exposed. Then everyone focuses it.

For the faceplates, the Hullcracker is the obvious pick: an epic pump-action launcher whose explosive rounds only detonate on ARC, with very strong ARC armor penetration and a 5-round magazine. The Equalizer, a legendary beam rifle with a 50-round energy clip, also has very strong armor penetration and suits sustained fire on an exposed core. It costs a Queen Reactor to craft, so most players won't have one on hand. Our weapons tier list has the other options.

What it drops

The main debris can hold a range of rare ARC materials, Complex Gun Parts and Magnetic Accelerators (both epic), and the legendary Matriarch Reactor. The Reactor is what you need to craft the Aphelion battle rifle at Gunsmith 3, alongside 3 Magnetic Accelerators and 3 Complex Gun Parts, and 3 of them go into the fifth stage of the Trophy Display project. Magnetic Accelerators go into many Gunsmith 3 guns, the Hullcracker and Equalizer included, and for Gunsmith level 4 (see our endgame guide).

Frozen Trail changed where that loot sits. Embark's 2.0 notes moved the higher-tier loot from the armor pieces on the legs to the leg pieces themselves, because "the armor plates are supposed to protect the legs". Players noticed straight away. u/Sure-Professor-5229 summed up the old habit it kills: "No more wasting ammo shooting off a leg armor just to have some vulture wait under the arc and snatch it" (thread). In practice, the loot now comes after the fight, so you have to stay alive until the end to collect it.

Our take

The Matriarch is worth it when you have a squad and a Hullcracker, mainly for the Reactor if you want an Aphelion. Solo, the summoned ARC make it a long fight in the open, and you still have to extract with whatever you looted. If the condition is up and your kit is thin, we'd loot the map and skip it. If you do engage, pick one of the wiki's high-ground spots before you fire the first shot, and treat every shield as a minute to clear adds.

How we checked this

We rewrote this guide in October 2026 from the ARC Raiders Wiki's Matriarch, Matriarch (map condition), Hullcracker, Equalizer, Matriarch Reactor and Magnetic Accelerator pages. We haven't fought the Matriarch ourselves; the attack descriptions, spots and loot come from those pages.
